Wage Range: $42.26 - $67.92 per hour. The amounts listed are the base pay range; additional compensation, such as shift differentials and premiums may be available for this role. Job offers are determined based on a candidate's years of relevant experience, applicable education and internal equity.

JOB SUMMARY:

Provides therapeutic Respiratory Care treatment, management, diagnostic evaluation, and care of adult and pediatric patients with deficiencies and abnormalities in the cardiopulmonary system. Coordinates patient care needs with physicians/nursing staff. Transcribes/implements physician orders. Uses assessment skills/patient information to maintain awareness and coordinate patient care needs. Troubleshoots and takes steps to correct clinical problems; refers unusual circumstances to supervision. Uses an understanding of the principles of growth and development to assess each patient's age specific needs and provide age specific treatment and care. Must be able to respond to varying and demanding patient needs in all patient care areas of the hospital.

EDUCATION
Completion of an accredited two-year respiratory care program required. Successful passage of the NBRC registry exam.

LICENSURE:
Requires current license through the State of Washington as a Respiratory Therapist (LR). Requires current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Must obtain Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) certification within six months of hire date.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TECHNICAL

  • Administers prescribed jet nebulizers, IPPB, oxygen concentrations, gases, aerosols, and humidity to patients and other recognized pulmonary modalities.
  • Obtains and performs analysis on arterial blood gas specimens following prescribed procedure for use of equipment involved (runs Q.C. and calibrates equipment to ensure valid results and recognizes invalid data).
  • Performs tasks associated with outpatient population, such as cardiac stress tests, PFTs.
  • Performs critical care procedures managing ventilators and other associated procedures, such as extubation and tracheotomy changes.
  • Performs other designated procedures/skills such as EKG’s, airway management, etc.
  • Performs chest physical therapy, including postural therapy and percussion procedures.
  • Recognizes possible side effects of all modes of therapy and drugs administered following adverse reaction policy and notifying appropriate personnel.
  • Monitors, assesses and records patient data (transcribes physician orders, assesses patient's medical response to therapy and maintains documentation on approved departmental/hospital forms.
  • Participates in department shift reports, relating the condition of patients under respiratory care to the next shift.
  • Disassembles equipment, transports to central supply for cleans and/or sterilizes, reassembles and ensures that equipment is in working order.
  • Operates monitors (i.e., pulse oximeters, oxygen analyzers), oxygen devices (i.e., flow meters, nebulizers, oxyhoods, etc.), spirometers, peak flow meters, etc.
  • Greets patient and family (says hello, gives name and position, confirms patient with approved identifiers, asks about patient condition, listens and responds to answers); responds to patient/family requests.
  • Uses an understanding of the principles of growth and development to assess each patient's age specific needs and provide age specific treatment and care.
  • Addresses conflict (privately acknowledges it, diffuses feeling by listening, explores others feeling viewpoint, speaks opinion without labeling or blaming, discusses solution), involving supervisor as needed.
  • Displays sound judgment, initiative and seeks opportunities to improve patient care; serves as patient advocate.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in response to unexpected changes in work volume, emergency staffing and schedule changes.
  • Completes all procedures scheduled during the shift without sacrificing the quality of work performed.
  • Participates in required and voluntary continuing education programs to reach professional growth; maintains current knowledge (i.e., CPR), and skills via in-services, seminars and hospital programs.
  • Assists in other areas of the hospital between patient rounds and procedures.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between EvergreenHealth Monroe and United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 3000.
