This Architect role is focused on communication platforms. Communication Systems Architect is responsible for the strategy, design, and evolution of enterprise communication platforms that enable seamless collaboration for both clinical and non-clinical workflows, and exceptional user experiences. This role bridges business needs, clinical operations, and technical architecture, ensuring communication technologies are scalable, secure, reliable, and aligned with organizational strategy.

The architect serves as a technical thought leader and integrator, guiding decisions across voice, video, messaging, contact center, and emerging digital communication capabilities while partnering closely with clinical, operational, and IT stakeholders. This role directly impacts how patients, clinicians, and staff communicate every day. The Communications Systems Architect helps ensure that communication is not just technically sound but purpose-built, intuitive, resilient, and aligned with the mission of care delivery. This role requires staying up to date on industry regulations and healthcare requirements, as well as, staying current on latest industry trends and technologies. This role requires the ability to work with both internal stakeholders/IT teams and external vendors.

Skills:

  • Enterprise communications technologies, including:
    • Voice and Telephony (on-prem and cloud)
    • Unified communication and collaboration platforms
    • Contact center solutions.
    • Video conferencing and virtual care platforms
  • Strong understanding of networking fundamentals, Quality of Service (QoS), security and identity management.
  • Proven ability to design, document, and govern complex architectures.
  • Programming or scripting experience with a solid understanding of healthcare APIs
  • Familiarity with Epic, and FHIR/HL7 integration concepts preferred.
  • Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to influence without authority and guide cross-functional decision making.
  • Vendor-agnostic mindset with a commitment to staying current on industry trends.
  • Strategic thinking with the ability to translate vision into executable architecture.

Essential Functions:

  • Define and maintain the enterprise communications architecture roadmap, aligning technology strategy with clinical, operational, and business priorities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including developers, business analysts, and healthcare professionals, to understand requirements and ensure the communication workflows/platforms aligns with organizational goals.
  • Develop communication strategies, frameworks, and best practices, ensuring compliance with healthcare industry guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Design secure, resilient, and scalable communication platforms across voice, video, messaging, and contact center capabilities. Develop and maintain architecture standards, reference designs, and documentation.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and vendors, providing architectural guidance and recommendations.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineering and development teams, ensuring they understand and implement platform standards and strategies effectively.
  • Conduct thorough technical assessments and feasibility studies to determine the most suitable approaches and tools for specific healthcare use cases across platforms.
  • Ensure the security and privacy of patient data by adhering to healthcare regulations, including HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), and implementing robust authentication and authorization mechanisms.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot communication processes, promptly identifying and resolving issues to maintain high system availability and data integrity. Serve as an escalation point for complex technical challenges related to communication systems.
  • Stay up to date with the latest advancements and emerging trends in healthcare communication standards and technologies and apply this knowledge to enhance communication capabilities within the organization.
  • Collaborate with external vendors and healthcare partners to improve patient care and operational efficiency.
  • Apply the KH IS Framework management system to the execution of this role.

Work Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience in IT infrastructure or communications engineering
  • 5+ years in an architectural or senior technical leadership role
  • Experience designing and supporting enterprise-scale communication platforms
  • Healthcare experience strongly preferred

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, or a related field or equivalent combination of experience in healthcare information technology and/or communication technologies
  • Advanced degrees and certifications are advantageous.

Licenses, Certification, and Registration:

  • Cisco CCNP Enterprise/Collaboration or related industry certification (i.e. Aruba, Juniper) required.
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) required.
  • Certified Wireless Network Professional (CWNP) required within 6 months of hire
  • Azure: AZ 305 Designing Microsoft Infrastructure Solutions required within 1 year of hire
