[Summer 2026] Elementary Athletics Coach

Originally founded in 1991 as Harlem RBI, DREAM has grown to annually serve more than 2,500 youth across East Harlem and the South Bronx through a network of seven PreK-12, extended-day, extended-year DREAM Charter Schools and community sports-based youth development programs. DREAM is seeking dynamic individuals to serve as Athletics Coaches in our elementary-age summer learning program (REAL Kids) in East Harlem and the South Bronx. Reporting to the Dean of Enrichment and Athletics, Athletics Coaches implement outdoor skill-based sport and recreational lessons based on DREAMs curriculum. The ideal candidate is a reliable team player with a commitment to youth development and a background in baseball, softball or soccer coaching. The Athletics Coaches are key members of the program team and ensure the continued excellence, growth and sustainability of DREAMs programs.

Like all DREAM employees, the Athletics Coaches should demonstrate a strong commitment to the mission and values of DREAM and should have substantial expertise in all areas of responsibility.
Responsibilities
  • Assist Dean with leading huddles with high school coaches to review Athletics plans and train in facilitation best practices and strategies,
  • Responsible for all outdoor/on field sports programming;
  • Lead implementation of youth sports practices and games;
  • Deliver, structured, skill-based sport education lessons;
  • Mentor and set a positive example for high school-aged coaches;
  • Supervise and manage students at all times using restorative practices and proactive interventions to ensure physical and emotional safety;
  • Model and encourage positive participation in all daily activities;
  • Use Sports Based Youth Development principles to create an inclusive and accessible competitive sports environment;
  • Participate in professional development and tactical meetings as necessary;
  • Implement all standard health and safety protocols as required.
  • Monitor youth and high school coaches during practices and games;
  • Responsible for ensuring all playing areas are safe and for implementing all DREAM safety guidelines;
  • Responsible for the escalation and documentation of all incidents, emergencies, injuries, and the filing of incident reports;
Qualifications
  • 18+ years old and high school diploma or equivalent required by June 30, 2025;
  • Ability to facilitate high quality recreation programming with large groups of elementary aged youth in an outdoor environment while ensuring student safety;
  • Ability to independently follow practice plans/lesson plans;
  • Exhibits high energy, warmth, enthusiasm and patience in working with youth;
  • Demonstrated success as a recreation specialist strongly preferred;
  • Demonstrated success as an elementary baseball, softball or soccer assistant coach strongly preferred;
  • Experience playing baseball, softball, or soccer preferred;
  • Experience working in a summer camp, youth development, recreation or athletics setting;
  • Ability to uphold, promote, and model positive youth development principles;
  • Experience with behavior management, including positive youth development, preferred;
  • Ability to quickly problem-solve in the moment;
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team setting;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, organization skills and attention to detail;
  • Skilled problem-solver and self-starter;
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish), a plus;
  • A strong belief in the mission and values of DREAM, including the desire to make a difference in the lives of our students, families, and community.

  • End date: 7/31/2026
  • Days & hours: Monday-Thursday: 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Compensation
  • DREAM offers competitive compensation commensurate with relevant experience with the potential for a seasonal increase. The rate for this position for incoming staff is between $20 and $23 per hour. New hires are typically brought into the role at a salary closer to the start of the range depending on qualifications and internal equity.
