About This Position
Unit Secretary/CNA
Provides direct and indirect patient care under the direction of a RN or physician. Assists patients with activities of daily living, provides for personal care, emotional support and performs more complex clinical skills under the direction of a RN.
- Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient's age.
- Interacts professionally with patient and family.
- Provides care appropriate to condition and age of patient, including neonate, pediatric, and the general patient population.
- Provides patient care that meets the psychosocial and physical needs of the patient within the CNA's scope of practice.
- Assists with patient admissions, discharge and transfers.
- Provides morning cares as needed which may include bed bath, shower, whirlpool, oral hygiene, combing hair, back care, dressing patients, changing bed linen, cleaning overbed table and bedside stand, straightening room and other general care as necessary throughout the shift.
- Provides general nursing care such as positioning patients, lifting and turning patients, applying/utilizing special equipment, assisting in use of bedpan, commode and ambulating patients as needed.
- Prepares patients for meals; serves and removes food trays and assists with meals or feeds patients if necessary.
- Provide care to infant patients to include diapering, bottle feeding, bathing, and assist the nursing staff when appropriate.
- Distributes drinking water and snacks to patients as applicable.
- Answers patients' call lights, anticipates patients' needs and makes rounds to patients.
- Transports patients to various departments for ordered tests/procedures.
- Demonstrates the ability to perform procedures within the CNA’s scope of practice per state law.
- Takes and records patient’s temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, blood pressure and intake-output per hospital policy. Notify the RN with any changes.
- Reports patient complaint of pain to supervising RN.
- Observes patient's mental and physical conditions, reports any changes to supervising RN.
- Knowledgeable of sterile techniques and infection control procedures.
- Shows ability to set up sterile table for vaginal deliveries.
- Cleans equipment and stocks supplies as needed or as directed by the supervising RN.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Participates in patient care conferences.
- Communicates in a clear and concise manner to RNs and medical staff.
- Maintains a good working relationship within the department and with other departments.
- Documentation meets current standards and policies.
- Attends in-service education programs, as assigned, to learn new treatments, procedures, developmental skills etc.
- Treat patient and families with respect and dignity.
- Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
- Shows competence in performing Hearing Screen on infants.
- Ability to perform infant screens, which include CHD, blood pressures, head circumference, and TcB as ordered and communicates results to RN.
- Demonstrates competence in care of specimens and accurately handles specimens at all times.
- Assists in positioning, prepping and draping of patients for surgical procedures.
- Carries out medical/surgical asepsis during treatments/procedures.
- Ability to use basic computer skills for charting and communication.
Regulatory Requirements:
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Current CNA certification in the state of Nebraska.
- Prior CNA experience preferred.
- Current BLS certificate.
