About This Position
Position Summary
The Long-Term Substitute Band Teacher will provide high-quality music instruction and support the school’s performing arts program during an extended teacher absence. The ideal candidate will have experience working with elementary-aged students, strong classroom management skills, and a passion for teaching music fundamentals and instrumental performance in an engaging and structured learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Lesson Delivery
Provide daily instruction aligned with district and school standards for elementary band/music education.
Teach fundamentals of music including rhythm, pitch, dynamics, tempo, tone, notation, and performance skills.
Lead beginning instrumental instruction and rehearsals appropriate for elementary grade levels.
Differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs and learning styles.
Classroom & Program Management
Maintain a safe, structured, and positive learning environment.
Implement classroom behavior expectations and schoolwide discipline procedures.
Maintain accurate attendance, seating charts, and student participation records.
Ensure proper care, inventory, and storage of band instruments and classroom equipment.
Student Engagement & Performance
Encourage student growth through rehearsals, feedback, and positive motivation.
Support preparation for performances, school assemblies, and community events (if applicable).
Promote teamwork, confidence, and leadership among student musicians.
Communication & Collaboration
Communicate regularly with school administration and relevant staff.
Collaborate with classroom teachers and special education personnel as needed.
Provide feedback and documentation to support transition back to the permanent band teacher.
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED (minimum required)
Must meet district substitute teacher eligibility requirements for Metro Atlanta area schools
Previous experience working with children in an instructional setting
Strong classroom management and communication skills
Ability to lead group instruction confidently and professionally
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Music Performance, Education, or related field
Experience teaching band or instrumental music at the elementary or middle school level
Ability to read music and teach basic instrument techniques
Prior experience as a substitute teacher or long-term substitute instructor
Familiarity with common elementary band instruments (woodwinds, brass, percussion)
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Ability to motivate and manage elementary students in group settings
Strong organizational skills and reliability
Confidence leading rehearsals and performances
Positive, professional demeanor with students and staff
Ability to adapt lesson plans quickly and follow existing curriculum guides
Working Conditions
Must be able to stand for extended periods and lead active rehearsals
Ability to lift and carry light-to-moderate equipment (instruments, stands, etc.)
Work environment includes classrooms, multipurpose rooms, and performance areas
