Summary

The Controller provides comprehensive oversight of the organization's financial accounting functions and is responsible for the integrity of financial records, reporting, audit readiness, and internal control environment. This role represents Accounting as a key collaborative partner with Fundraising, Debt Servicing, and other departments to support accurate tracking, movement, and reporting of capital, loan repayments, and grant funding. The Controller works closely with the CFO and cross-functional teams on financial reporting, board-level reporting.

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be included as assigned.

Accounting Oversight & Financial Reporting

  • Lead and oversee all accounting operations and staff

  • Own the general ledger and ensure the integrity of the books

  • Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes

  • Prepare GAAP-compliant financial statements

  • Maintain technical accounting standards and ensure ongoing GAAP compliance

Audit & Compliance

  • Lead the annual financial statement audit and serve as the primary auditor liaison

  • Ensure audit readiness throughout the year

  • Oversee preparation of required regulatory filings (e.g., Form 990 if applicable)

  • Maintain compliance with applicable accounting and reporting standards

Internal Controls

  • Establish and maintain strong internal Accounting controls

  • Oversee reconciliations and financial reporting controls

  • Strengthen internal financial governance and process discipline

Treasury Operations

  • Serve as the senior operator for day-to-day treasury activities

  • Monitor organizational cash balances and movement of funds across accounts

  • Execute and oversee fund transfers across lending programs, operating accounts, and restricted funds

  • Ensure accurate documentation and tracking of all treasury activity

  • Act as the Accounting liaison between Accounting, Debt Servicing and Fundraising departments on cash operations related to loan repayments and remittances

Capital & Grant Fund Management

  • Coordinate with Fundraising and the CFO to track investment capital and grant funding from commitment through deployment

  • Improve processes for tracking grant restrictions, reporting requirements, and fund utilization

  • Ensure Accounting receives clear documentation to support financial reporting and revenue recognition

Financial Systems & Workflow Optimization

  • Support improvement of financial workflows across Accounting, Servicing, and Fundraising

  • Identify opportunities for automation and system integration

  • Lead improvements to financial reporting and operational tracking systems

Management & Strategic Partnership

  • Oversee the day-to-day management and professional development of the Accounting team

  • Partner with the CFO on board reporting, financial disclosures, and strategic financial planning

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Minimum 8 years of Accounting / Finance experience with progressively increased responsibilities and number of direct reports

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, Accounting, or equivalent

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a professional team with a positive, proactive attitude.

  • Very good Excel and Presentation skills

  • Strong organizational and project management skills with ability to develop and revise systems, policies and procedures.

  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to review documents for accuracy and reasonableness.

  • Meets deadlines

  • Customer service orientation and ability to respond with sensitivity, patience, enthusiasm, and timeliness.

  • Flexible and self-directed.

  • High level of integrity and professional maturity with ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment.

Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Master’s degree in related field or MBA

  • Nonprofit accounting experience

  • QuickBooks experience

  • Experience in managing an integrated accounting system including grants, scholarships, and donor management software

Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
