Position SummaryThe Traffic Control Technician Trainee position is a progressive role supporting traffic control operations in construction and roadway environments. Employees work under the supervision of a Traffic Control Technician, with duties and responsibilities increasing based on experience, training, and certification. The position may be filled at the Traffic Technician Trainee I or Traffic Technician Trainee II level.
Applicants will be considered based on the below groups:
TRAFFIC TECHNICIAN TRAINEE 2
GROUP I: All applicants for employment who are residents of the geographical area constituting the normal construction labor market. In addition, the applicants are enrolled in the Traffic Control Certification Program, have 12 months / 2,000 hours experience as a Traffic Technician Trainee 1 and completed all required training to be promoted to Traffic Technician Trainee 2.
GROUP II: All applicants for employment who have two or more years' experience in the trade.
TRAFFIC TECHNICIAN TRAINEE 1
GROUP I: Any applicants for employment who are residents of the geographical area constituting the normal construction labor market and who are enrolled in the Traffic Control Certification Program.
GROUP II: All applicants for employment who have one or more years' experience in the trade.

- Sacramento, CA and surrouding areas
- Stockton, CA and surrounding areas
- Oakhurst/Mariposa, CA and surrounding areas
- Fresno, CA and surrounding areas
- Kern County
- Support traffic control operations at construction and roadway job sites
- Move, place, and remove traffic control devices such as cones, signs, and arrow boards
- Transport traffic control equipment to and from job sites
- Perform shop, yard, and inventory duties as assigned
- Follow all safety procedures, traffic control plans, and applicable regulations
Traffic Technician Trainee I Duties- Perform all Traffic Control Helper duties
- Operate a pilot vehicle
- Operate a crash cushion truck or trailer
- Direct traffic on roadways
- Assist with traffic control work-site setup and maintenance
Traffic Technician Trainee II Duties- Perform all Traffic Technician Trainee I duties
- Direct traffic on all roadways, regardless of posted speed limits
- Assist with advanced and complex traffic control operations
Training & Certification Requirements- Caltrans Certified Flagger certification (required for all levels)
- Enrollment in the Traffic Control Certification Program (required for Trainee I & II)
- Completion of Traffic Technician Trainee I training requirements (required for Trainee II)
- Traffic Technician Trainee I: One (1) or more years of experience in the trade or enrollment in the certification program
- Traffic Technician Trainee II: Minimum of 12 months / 2,000 hours as Trainee I or two (2) or more years of trade experience

Physical Demands & Work EnvironmentEmployees must be able to stand for extended periods, work outdoors in varying weather conditions, lift and move traffic control equipment, and remain alert while working around moving vehicles and heavy equipment.
