Equipment Engineer
(Direct Placement for Client)
Sigma Design has collaborated with a global company seeking an experienced Equipment Engineer to join their facility in Gresham, OR. This company is a leader in the design, development and production of synthetic diamond and tungsten carbide super materials.

Primary Function:
The Equipment Engineer is responsible for ensuring the reliability, availability, and performance of site equipment through the development and execution of robust maintenance, reliability, and improvement programs. This role works closely with Maintenance, Operations, and external partners to deliver safe, efficient, and reliable equipment performance while contributing to capital projects and continuous improvement initiatives.

Duties and tasks
  • Develop an in-depth technical understanding of CVD diamond-synthesis reactors, lasers and other site equipment.
  • Become the in-house expert on the production equipment and take on a supporting role for Maintenance Technicians.
  • Develop, document, and standardize preventive and predictive maintenance processes, procedures, troubleshooting guides, and system manuals.
  • Utilize data analysis tools to evaluate and improve site equipment efficiency.
  • Use tools such as 8D Root Cause Analysis & FMEAs to continuously improve the reliability of equipment and the maintenance program.
  • Plan, schedule, and support preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities in collaboration with Maintenance and Operations.
  • Manage projects related to equipment reliability and efficiency, commissioning of new equipment, and related tasks.
  • Lead and support CAPEX projects related to equipment upgrades, replacements, and new installations, including scope definition, execution, commissioning, and handover to site.
  • Develop and implement factory and site acceptance procedures.
  • Develop clear work instructions for and work with Maintenance staff to troubleshoot equipment.
  • Ensure that SOP’s & work instructions are frequently reviewed and modified to maximize efficiencies.
  • Develop and execute detailed risk assessments including identifying hazards, evaluating operational and safety impacts, and implementing mitigation strategies. Ensure compliance with internal standards and external regulations while fostering a proactive approach to risk management.
  • Outline and specify critical spare parts and calibration equipment for both commissioning and equipment maintenance.
  • Manage interface with vendors and contractors where required to deliver safe and compliant support to site operations, including sourcing parts and coordinating specialist maintenance support.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and operational uptime.
  • Develop URS, scope of work, technical specifications, and contractor documentation; manage change control and risk throughout equipment lifecycle activities.

Required skills
  • Education. Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related discipline with mechanical and/or electrical engineering aptitude

  • Presence. Ability to typically spend 5 days per week on site.

Preferred Skills
  • Experience developing and managing equipment reliability programs in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Working knowledge of equipment automation, controls, and instrumentation (PLC/HMI exposure preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience with root cause analysis (RCA), FMEA, and structured problem-solving methodologies.
  • Project management experience for equipment-related CAPEX projects, including contractor coordination.
  • Strong technical writing skills, with experience producing SOPs, URS, commissioning plans, and maintenance documentation.
  • Experience using basic hand tools.

Physical Requirements
  • Work is split between an office environment and manufacturing floor
  • The office environment requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards.
  • The manufacturing floor requires:
o Able to lift 50 lbs.
o Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and overhead reaching.
o Able to work from step-stools when required.
o Able to stand and walk for extended periods.
o Frequent use of hands for gripping, lifting, adjusting tools and components.

Work Environment
Standard office environment with normal amounts of office related conditions. Occasionally may be required to work in environmental conditions that emulate typical user environments in order to facilitate design testing and validation. Occasionally may be required to travel as required to other facilities, clients, or suppliers.
