Position Summary:

The Mechanical Engineering Intern will play a key role in the DwyerOmega Engineering Shared Services Team. The Mechanical Engineering Intern will engage in their teams to support the engineering team by creating accurate SolidWorks 3D models and assemblies from existing engineering drawings. This role is ideal for a student pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering who wants hands-on experience applying drafting standards, interpreting technical drawings, and supporting real-world product development.

The intern will work closely with engineers to ensure models are generated in accordance with company modeling standards, file structure protocols, and documentation requirements.

Essential Job Functions

  • Generate precise 3D part and assembly models in SolidWorks from 2D engineering drawings.
  • Apply company modeling standards, naming conventions, and file management practices.
  • Create and maintain fully defined sketches and properly constrained models.
  • Build assemblies with appropriate mates and configurations.
  • Review drawings for clarity and completeness prior to modeling; identify and communicate discrepancies.
  • Organize and maintain CAD files within the company’s PDM or file management system.
  • Collaborate with engineers to ensure models reflect design intent and manufacturability considerations.
Requirements:

Essential Skills:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks (academic or project experience acceptable).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, including dimensions, tolerances, and GD&T fundamentals.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical components and manufacturing processes.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with assemblies, configurations, and design tables in SolidWorks.
  • Familiarity with PDM systems.
  • Exposure to company or industry drafting standards (ASME Y14.5 preferred).
  • Prior internship, co-op, or project-based CAD experience.

Work Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Work is performed in an office located on the second floor; candidates should be able to access this workspace with occasional time spent on the shop floor and in the stockroom to inspect and measure parts and assemblies.
  • No travel required for this role.
  • This position may require standing, walking, and occasionally lifting up to 25 pounds.
