Summer Tax Accounting Internship

FLSA: Non-Exempt, Hourly

Position Summary

Smart Start is seeking an accounting college student to facilitate and improve our sales and use tax return preparation process. Property tax and annual registration renewals may also be involved. The position is located at our headquarters in Grapevine, Texas. The intern will report to the Sr. Tax Manager and will collaborate with both internal and external professionals in our Accounting, FP&A, and Legal departments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist with preparing sales and use tax returns and supporting related compliance processes.

• Gather, organize, and reconcile tax data from internal systems and source documents.

• Support property tax filings, annual registration renewals, and other recurring tax-related projects as assigned.

• Research tax notices, jurisdiction requirements, and account details under the guidance of the Sr. Tax Manager.

• Prepare schedules, workpapers, and documentation to support filings, audits, and internal review.

• Partner with team members in Accounting, FP&A, and Legal to obtain information and resolve questions promptly.

• Maintain accurate records and help identify opportunities to improve tax preparation workflows and process efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program with a major in accounting
  • Experience working with software tools such as Excel, Word, and Adobe
  • Thrives in fast-paced environment with a strong sense of urgency
  • Excellent prioritization and organizational skills
  • Team Player willing to go the extra mile
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
