Description: Position Title: Paralegal

Department: Legal

Reports to: General Counsel

Supervision Received: Limited Supervision

Supervision Exercised: None

FLSA Status: Exempt

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Primary duties include exercising discretion and independent judgment regarding matters of significance and performing office non-manual work directly related to legal, management, and general business operations. This position:

  • Support General Counsel: conduct legal research, draft documents, manage timelines and case files, assist with real estate closings, manage calendar and workload.
  • Resolve routine legal issues.
  • Conduct record searches to determine vested ownership of real estate;
  • Research and analyze law sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, treaties, constitutions, and legal codes.
  • Draft, review, and finalize legal documents, including but not limited to contracts, easements, correspondence, pleadings, etc., and perform an extensive review of vendor contracts organization-wide
  • Interact with internal clients, courts, vendors, and administrative bodies.
  • Perform substantive legal reviews under an attorney's supervision.
  • Organize and maintain files.
  • Has a general awareness of current developments in areas of interest to the department and electric utilities.
  • Use safe work practices at all times and in all situations.
  • Must be able to appropriately handle confidential information and act within the practices established by Bluebonnet Red Flag policy.
  • Participate in meetings as needed and provide valuable feedback

Tools and Equipment Used:

  • Office Equipment, including computer, printer, copier, etc.
  • May be required to drive a cooperative vehicle.
  • According to established business needs, one must maintain a mobile phone and an appropriate communications plan.

Physical Demands:

  • Requires repetitive motion of hands and fingers, such as dialing and keyboarding.
  • Light lifting of up to 10 pounds.

Work Environment:

  • Typical in-person office environment.
  • Hours are consistent with normal business operations as well as employee and member requirements.
  • Attendance at evening meetings, conferences, workshops, and other professional meetings, including overnight travel, may be required.
  • Be available to provide legal/general business services outside normal business hours on an as-needed basis
Requirements:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience

Licensing and Certification:

  • Valid Texas driver's license.
  • Texas Notary Public or willing to become.
  • Must be willing to become certified in CPR, First Aid, AED and Blood-borne pathogens.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiar with a variety of Texas law-related concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Familiar with litigation processes, easements, utility practices, property rights, contracts, policy formation, bankruptcy, and administrative proceedings.
  • Rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • May lead and direct the work of others.
  • A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
  • Able to multi-task, prioritize multiple assignments, and meet tight deadlines. work independently, under pressure, in a high-stress environment.
  • Advanced skills in enterprise-wide software applications, including Word, Excel, and Smartsheet.
  • Interpersonal skills that result in effective working relationships with peers, members, and vendors.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and in a positive manner; focused on improvement or problem resolution in a constructive, positive, and professional manner.
  • Ability to learn and understand corporate tariffs, bylaws, charter, policies, and guidelines
  • Maintain familiarity with the basic techniques of emergency response, including First Aid, CPR, and Bloodborne Pathogens, to be prepared to provide emergency treatment to fellow employees and the public if needed.
