PURPOSE/SUMMARY:

As a VDC Structural Steel Estimator III, you will play a critical role in supporting our Sales, Pre-Construction, Procurement, and Project Management teams during the conceptual and schematic phases of construction. You will leverage your technical expertise and attention to detail to develop accurate steel takeoffs, Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) estimates, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and change order documentation.

This position is ideal for a technologically minded, detail-oriented professional who thrives in a collaborative environment and has a strong understanding of steel construction processes and estimating standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Steel Estimating and Documentation

  • Interpret contract documents, IFC drawings, and engineering plans to create detailed steel-specific scope lists and quantity takeoffs
  • Identify potential design and fabrication concerns early and prepare preliminary RFIs and clarification questions
  • Prepare Bills of Materials (BOMs) to support fabrication and erection
  • Relay open assumptions and clarifications to detailing teams upon project award

Estimating Management

  • Develop and manage detailed estimates using Tekla Power Fab and related estimating tools
  • Utilize Navisworks to review 3D models, perform takeoffs, and build scope lists
  • Maintain organized project files in accordance with company standards
  • Align steel estimating takeoff codes with internal workflows
  • Identify and generate change orders by comparing updated drawings and models to original takeoffs

Software and Technology Utilization

  • Perform advanced data analysis using Excel and Microsoft Office 365 applications (Word, Outlook, OneNote, Teams)
  • Utilize Bluebeam (or similar PDF takeoff software) to perform steel quantity takeoffs
  • Download, review, and organize drawings and models from Procore, BIM360, and similar platforms

Quality Assurance and Collaboration

  • Collaborate closely with Sales, Project Management, engineers, and contractors to ensure accuracy and clarity
  • Conduct thorough self-reviews prior to submission
  • Ensure scope lists and estimating packages are accurate, complete, and delivered on time

Industry Knowledge and Standards

  • Produce estimating packages including scope lists, assumptions, exceptions, furnish-only items, and operating data sheets in accordance with AISC Detailing for Steel Construction (3rd Edition)
  • Set up new projects per Chapter 2 of the AISC Detailing for Steel Construction (3rd Edition)
  • Maintain an intermediate understanding of IBC, UFC, CBC, and AISC Steel Estimating Standards
  • Apply in-depth knowledge of steel construction processes across commercial, industrial, residential, and municipal projects

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in structural steel estimating or related VDC/steel construction role
  • Strong proficiency in Tekla Power Fab, Navisworks, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience reviewing 3D models and construction documents
  • Solid understanding of AISC detailing and steel estimating standards
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • Team-oriented mindset with a proactive approach to problem-solving
