Position Title: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with Polysomnography Certification
Position Purpose:
The Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with Polysomnography Certification provides advanced respiratory care and sleep diagnostic services in accordance with VA clinical standards, established policies, and regulatory requirements. This position supports pulmonary and sleep medicine services by performing respiratory therapy treatments, conducting sleep studies, and ensuring safe and effective patient care within the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System.
This position is Contingent Upon Award of Contract 36C26226Q0285. Employment is dependent upon Government award and contract funding.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Provide respiratory therapy treatments including oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy, airway management, and ventilator management as prescribed.
• Perform comprehensive cardiopulmonary assessments and document findings in the electronic health record.
• Conduct overnight and daytime polysomnography studies in accordance with AASM guidelines and VA protocols.
• Prepare, calibrate, and monitor sleep study equipment including EEG, EOG, EMG, ECG, airflow monitoring, respiratory effort, pulse oximetry, and related diagnostic devices.
• Score and document sleep studies in accordance with established criteria and report findings to supervising providers.
• Identify and respond appropriately to respiratory distress, apnea events, arrhythmias, and other abnormalities during testing.
• Educate patients on CPAP/BiPAP usage, compliance requirements, equipment maintenance, and sleep hygiene.
• Assist with CPAP/BiPAP titration studies and follow-up compliance assessments.
• Maintain and troubleshoot respiratory and sleep diagnostic equipment.
• Participate in interdisciplinary coordination with physicians, nurses, and sleep medicine providers.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation in compliance with VA clinical standards.
• Adhere to infection control policies, patient safety protocols, and facility procedures.
Qualifications
Requirements:
• Current RTT credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
• Current Polysomnographic Technologist certification (RPSGT) through the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) or equivalent recognized credential.
• Current, unrestricted license to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in any U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in respiratory therapy; experience in sleep diagnostics preferred.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred or required per facility standards.
• Experience with CPAP/BiPAP titration and sleep study scoring preferred.
• Ability to pass VA credentialing, background screening, and onboarding requirements.
• Must meet all VA health screening and drug testing requirements.
Working Conditions and Environment
Work is performed in a hospital or clinical sleep laboratory environment. The position may require overnight shifts, exposure to infectious diseases, and rapid response to clinical changes. Personal protective equipment will be utilized in accordance with VA policy.
Physical Requirements
The position requires repetitive motion, such as standing, walking, sitting, and bending. Light lifting, up to 20 pounds, may be required.
