About This Position
JOB SUMMARY
The Engineer I-III supports the mission of providing quality healthcare to the patients, visitors and employees of WhidbeyHealth by ensuring that the overall facilities and equipment operates efficiently to provide a safe environment. The Engineer is responsible for inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining hospital equipment which includes the physical structures, HVAC, mechanical and electrical systems, utilities and facility grounds. This position operates within established hospital policies and procedures for equipment and adheres to and follows all established safety practices to ensure and maintain a safe environment. The Engineer III will ensure all codes of the State of Washington, NFPA and other regulatory agencies are met or exceeded.
Under the direction of the Executive Director of Ancillary Services, the Engineer III will be responsible for creating and executing the preventive maintenance procedures and schedule for all new and existing equipment. Coordinate daily operations with the other Engineers and Maintenance Techs. Give daily updates to the Executive Director of Ancillary Services.
An Engineer I is eligible to move to an Engineer II after the completion of three (3) consecutive years as an Engineer I in Plant Operations and obtaining a nationally recognized, trade specific certification with the proven ability to perform all essential functions and competencies of the position with no recent performance improvement documentation on file. Coordinate daily operations with the other Engineers and Maintenance Techs. Give daily updates to the Executive Director of Ancillary Services.
An Engineer II is eligible to move to an Engineer III after the completion of five (5) consecutive years as an Engineer I-II in Plant Operations and obtaining a nationally recognized, trade specific certification with the proven ability to perform all essential functions and competencies of the position with no recent performance improvement documentation on file.
PRINCIPLE FUNCTIONS includes the following, other duties may be assigned:
- Follows established department schedule and procedures to ensure compliance with the Preventative Maintenance Program.
- Reports malfunction of any/all facility equipment or systems as soon as possible to the Executive Director of Ancillary Services.
- Responsible for electrical work to include minor electrical wiring, checking and repairing electrical
- Equipment & repairing electrical outlets, breakers, plugs and any other related equipment.
- Responsible for plumbing work to included checking, testing and repairing the following:
- Steam Valves and Systems
- Medical Gas Valves and Systems
- Fuel Lines and Systems
- Water Systems and Equipment
- Control Systems and Equipment
- Sewer Systems
- Repairs and maintains boilers, pumps, motors, HVAC equipment, controls, compressors, kitchen equipment, valves, generators, PT pool equipment, and any other areas needing maintenance.
- Checks and performs minor repairs of refrigeration equipment.
- Treats and tests boiler water, PT pool water, water heating and cooling systems, RO system and domestic systems.
- Repairs wood cabinets, counters, shelving and door hardware.
- Performs minor building remodeling.
- Responsible for plasterboard and finishing, cove base and ceiling tile.
- Coordinates fire and other hazardous drills or inspections.
- Reviews and orders department supplies as needed, ensures appropriate stick is available.
- Performs minor repair work on facility vehicles.
- Coordinates with outside vendors, service technicians, and sales representatives for department-related services.
- When working in “on-call” status in an emergency, may identify the need for outside vendor assistance and responds timely with proper vendor support.
- Completes all assignments within established timelines and in accordance with department established quality standards.
- Regularly attends hospital committee meetings as directed.
- Maintains positive communication with all customers, which includes but is not limited to patients, visitors, employees and outside vendors or service technicians.
- Training and onboarding new staff as directed.
- Scheduling and working with contracted vendors for maintenance services at all WhidbeyHealth locations.
- Ensures timeliness of work orders being completed and PM’s as assigned.
JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Highest level of education completed, minimum high school diploma or equivalent required.
Training and Experience
- Engineer I-II
Two (2) years of experience in building maintenance engineering required, hospital or similar healthcare related setting preferred.
- Engineer III
Five (5) years of experience in building maintenance engineering required, hospital or similar healthcare related setting preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Engineer I-II
- Boiler License, Fire Door Inspector, Medical Gas Certification is preferred and is eligible for premium pay.
- Engineer III
- An active Boiler License is required.
- Fire Door Inspector, Medical Gas Certification is preferred and is eligible for premium pay.
- Other - Engineer I- III
- Maintain a valid WA State Driver’s License, personal insurance, and is insurable with the District’s insurance carrier.
- Must provide a copy of Washington State driving record upon hire and may be subject to annual driving record checks based on facility insurance carrier requirements.
OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, welding, HVAC, structural repair, and remodeling.
- Must be familiar with maintenance and repair of boilers, steam and water controls, vacuum pumps, and compressors.
- Knowledge of Federal, State and Local building codes and standards.
- Must be able to plan, prioritize and organize work assigned within communicated deadlines.
- Must possess effective professional interpersonal skills as well as excellent service skills in all interactions with the ability to communicate effectively on the phone, in person and in writing.
