The Yard Leadperson is a working leader responsible for coordinating daily yard operations, directing and supporting yard staff, assisting customers, and maintaining a safe, organized, and efficient yard environment. This role serves as a liaison between yard staff and management while performing hands-on warehouse and yard duties.
Typical Responsibilities
Supervisory Duties
- Lead and coordinate daily work assignments for yard staff
- Serve as a point of contact between yard staff and management
- Train and support new employees
- Promote and enforce safety policies and procedures
- Communicate operational needs and team concerns to management
- Assist with problem-solving and workflow efficiency
Essential Duties
- Assist customers with yard materials and loading
- Receive, stock, pull, and stage yard materials
- Load materials safely for customers and deliveries
- Monitor inventory accuracy and assist with cycle counts
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe yard
- Operate material handling equipment safely
- Support other departments as needed
- Maintain regular, reliable attendance
Knowledge & Skills
- Working knowledge of yard operations, layout, and materials
- Ability to lead, direct, and motivate a hands-on team
- Strong safety awareness: knowledge of OSHA standards preferred
- Effective communication and customer service skills
- Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt in a fast-paced environment
- Basic computer skills; preferred RF device or warehouse system experience
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent; or
- 1–2 years of related experience and training; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certifications & Licenses
- Ability to pass operator exam and safely operate powered industrial equipment.
- Must pass a substance abuse screening.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Frequently required to walk, stand, talk, hear, grasp, handle, reach, and use fingers.
- Regularly required to sit, climb, bend, stoop, push, pull, carry, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must perform essential job functions safely and with consistent alertness.
- Vision requirements include near and far vision, depth perception, and color vision.
- Work performed primarily indoors with occasional outdoor exposure to extreme weather.
