About This Position
The Safety Manager will develop, coordinate, and implement comprehensive occupational health and safety policies and procedures across multiple locations to promote and ensure effective safety operations throughout the organization. This role requires expertise in Lean and Six Sigma methodologies to drive continuous improvement in safety performance, reduce workplace incidents, and optimize safety processes while maintaining regulatory compliance.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Oversees safety staff and coordinators across multiple facility locations
- Ensures that clerical and safety staff maintain the OSHA safety log and other administrative requirements related to safety operations and regulations
- Manages safety team performance, training, and development
- Coordinates safety initiatives and standardizes best practices across all locations
Safety Leadership & Compliance:
- Collaborates with management to develop, prepare, and implement safety policies and procedures across all locations
- Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local safety laws, regulations, codes, and rules at each facility
- Ensures completion of required OSHA recordkeeping and reporting for all sites
- Provides technical and administrative support to safety committees at each location
- Stops operations and activities that could harm employees or equipment
- Reviews accident and incident reports from all locations and identifies trends
- Conducts comprehensive safety inspections and audits across multiple facilities to assess employee compliance with safety regulations
Continuous Improvement & Lean Six Sigma:
- Apply Lean and Six Sigma methodologies to identify and eliminate safety hazards and inefficiencies
- Lead DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) projects focused on reducing workplace injuries and incidents
- Conduct root cause analysis using Six Sigma tools (5 Whys, Fishbone diagrams, Pareto analysis) to prevent recurring safety issues
- Implement process improvements that enhance safety protocols while reducing waste and improving operational efficiency
- Establish and monitor safety KPIs and metrics across all locations to drive data-driven decision making
- Facilitate kaizen events and continuous improvement workshops focused on safety performance
- Develop and maintain standard work procedures that integrate safety and efficiency best practices
Multi-Location Management:
- Travel regularly to all facility locations to conduct site visits, inspections, and safety assessments
- Coordinate safety programs and initiatives across geographically dispersed facilities
- Ensure consistency in safety standards, training, and compliance across all locations
- Develop site-specific safety plans that address unique hazards while maintaining organizational standards
- Build strong relationships with location managers and safety coordinators to foster a unified safety culture
- Benchmark safety performance across locations and share best practices
- Manage emergency response planning and crisis management protocols for all sites
Training & Culture Development:
- Conducts employee training on applicable safety standards across all locations
- Reviews safety training programs and recommends revisions, improvements, and updates using continuous improvement principles
- Develops and delivers Lean-based safety training that integrates efficiency with safety protocols
- Identifies opportunities to minimize workplace injuries, accidents, and health problems through proactive measures
- Fosters a culture of safety excellence and continuous improvement at all organizational levels
- Creates communication strategies to share safety successes and lessons learned across locations
Skills/Abilities:
- Extensive knowledge of current company safety policies and applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards
- Strong understanding of Lean and Six Sigma principles and their application to safety management
- Proven ability to manage safety programs across multiple locations and coordinate remote teams
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to influence across all organizational levels
- Strong analytical skills with proficiency in data analysis and performance metrics
- Ability to conduct training and facilitate continuous improvement workshops
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong supervisory and leadership skills with experience managing geographically dispersed teams
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, data analysis tools, and safety management software
- Experience with root cause analysis methodologies and problem-solving tools
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Health and Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health, Industrial Engineering, or related field required
- At least seven years of occupational health and safety experience in an industrial environment required
- Minimum three years of experience managing safety operations across multiple locations required
- Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification required; Black Belt preferred
- OSHA 30-Hour certification required
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent safety certification preferred
- Experience leading continuous improvement initiatives in safety operations preferred
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times
- Ability to travel throughout multiple facilities as required to conduct safety inspections and site visits
- Regular travel required (up to 40-50% of time) to visit and assess safety operations at various locations
- Ability to work in various industrial environments including manufacturing floors, warehouses, and outdoor settings
- Must be able to climb ladders, navigate stairs, and access confined spaces during facility inspections
