Position Summary
The Augustana University School of Music invites applications for an energetic, full-time, continuing-term instructor position beginning in August 2026.
This faculty member will play an active role in the university’s marching band and athletic band programs in collaboration with instrumental leadership in the School of Music. Teaching responsibilities will include applied percussion and other courses consistent with the candidate’s qualifications and program needs, including possible assignments in percussion pedagogy, First-Year Seminar, music appreciation, and related areas. The position also includes responsibilities in student ensemble recruitment, coordination of Augustana Day of Percussion, and oversight of percussion inventory, maintenance, repair, and logistics in collaboration with ensemble directors and community partners.
This an 9‑month appointment.
Primary Responsibilities
Athletic Bands (≈ 50 %)
Artistic & Administrative Leadership – Assistant director for the Viking Marching Band, directs Basketball Pep Band, directs Drumline
Recruitment & Retention – Recruits for athletic bands, drumline, percussion, and other SoM ensembles.
Operations & Logistics – Coordinates budgets, inventories, and student workers in managing the percussion area for multiple ensembles
Community & Visibility – Represent Augustana at campus, community, and regional events.
Teaching & Service (≈ 35 %)
Teach undergraduate music courses
Teach First Year Seminar course
Contribute to faculty governance and School initiatives.
Percussion Area Leadership (≈ 15 %)
Student Coordination – Coordinate students to set up, tear down, and move equipment
Strategic Partnership – Collaborate with the School of Music leadership on partnerships involving percussion assets.
Required Qualifications
The successful candidate will hold a master’s degree in music, experience in collegiate marching band, drumlines and a successful history of recruitment. Additionally, the candidate should be an outstanding performer and teacher in percussion pedagogy and performance.Preferred Qualifications
Doctorate (Ph.D., D.M.A., etc.)
Proven program‑leadership or administrative experience at the university level.
National recognition for excellence in teaching, ensemble leadership, or performance.
Facility with technology‑enhanced instruction
Appointment & Compensation
Rank: Instructor (Non‑Tenure Track)
Term: 9‑month renewable contract per University policy
Salary: Commensurate with experience
