About This Position
Job Description Scope of Work:
The Summer English Academy (SEA) at the Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants (CIRI) is a four-week program focusing on preparing newly arrived refugee youth to succeed at their grade level in the Stamford public school system. This year, up to 60 students aged 5-15 from Ukraine will participate in ESL, creative arts, and science.
The Teacher Aide will assist Lead Teachers with providing academic and social support to help refugee youth prepare to enter a classroom setting. Each Teacher Aid will be assigned to a grade grouping. Expected grade groups are elementary, middle, and high school level. Exact grade level groupings are subject to change based on student enrollment demographics. Candidates must specify which subject(s) they prefer to teach and which grade group(s) they prefer to work with. In the afternoons, Teacher Aides will support the various activities, ranging from Art Therapy to outdoor activities with children such as sports, dancing, and games.
Position term: July 13th – August 6th, 2026
Pay: $19.50 / hour
Hours:
Pre-program Training and Planning: Two to three planning sessions/check ins throughout the month of June (exact times and dates flexible, TBD). Attend a mandatory First-Aid Training on June 24th from 3PM-5PM at CIRI 410 Colorado Ave, Bridgeport, CT 06605.
Main Program: July 13th – August 6th: Monday – Thursday, 9:00AM-3:00PM.
Essential Job Function:
•Participate in the Teachers Meet & Greet, instructional planning sessions, pre-program All Staff trainings
•With direction from Lead Teachers, assist with implementation of a culturally and age- appropriate curriculum
•Lead and help with afternoon activity sessions
•Reinforce positive classroom management
•Supervise students during breakfast, lunchtime, and breaks
•Be a positive role model for students and staff
Qualification Requirements:
•Current undergraduate or graduate in education, psychology, social work, or a related field
•Experience providing academic instruction or tutoring services to youth, especially to English Language Learners
•Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations preferred
•Cultural competence and cross-cultural or overseas experience desirable
•Second language proficiency in relevant language desirable (Ukrainian/Russian)
