About the Role:
The Lab Assistant plays a critical role in supporting the daily operations of healthcare laboratories by ensuring that all laboratory activities are conducted efficiently and accurately. This position involves collecting, preparing and transporting specimens, maintaining laboratory equipment, and assisting with routine tests under the supervision of senior laboratory personnel. The Lab Assistant contributes to the accuracy and reliability of test results by adhering to strict protocols and quality control measures. Additionally, the role requires meticulous documentation and compliance with safety and regulatory standards to maintain a safe working environment. Ultimately, the Lab Assistant helps facilitate timely and precise diagnostic services that are essential for patient care and laboratory department initiatives within the healthcare facility.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic knowledge of laboratory safety and hygiene practices.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and protocols accurately.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with team members.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Completion of a certificate or associate degree program in medical laboratory technology or a related field.
- Previous experience working in a healthcare or clinical laboratory setting.
- Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
- Basic understanding of medical terminology and laboratory procedures.
- Certification as a Laboratory Assistant or equivalent credential.
Responsibilities:
- Collect, label, and prepare biological specimens for analysis according to established protocols.
- Operate, clean, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment to ensure optimal functionality.
- Assist laboratory technologists and technicians with routine tests and procedures as directed.
- Maintain accurate records of laboratory activities, including specimen tracking and test results documentation.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including proper disposal of biohazardous materials.
- Manage inventory of laboratory supplies and notify supervisors when reordering is necessary.
- Support quality control processes by monitoring reagent expiration dates and equipment calibration.

The Lab Assistant utilizes their attention to detail and organizational skills daily to ensure specimens are correctly prepared and documented, which is vital for accurate test results. Communication skills are essential for coordinating with laboratory staff and reporting any issues promptly.
