Job Description: The City of Chesapeake is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Water Meter Technician Crew Leader to lead a high-performing team in a fast-paced, field-based environment. This role is ideal for a hands-on leader who thrives on organization, problem-solving, and keeping operations running smoothly.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and supervise a team of approximately 9 Water Meter Technicians
  • Ensure accurate and timely meter readings to support the City’s billing process
  • Manage a bi-monthly reading cycle (55–58 days) and adjust staffing as needed
  • Plan, assign, and load daily routes using handheld devices and routing software
  • Conduct field audits and upload audit data for billing processing
  • Perform meter readings in the field when necessary
  • Assign small teams (2–3 technicians) based on strengths and workload
  • Oversee City-issued vehicles and ensure proper maintenance and cleanliness
  • Monitor employee vehicle upkeep and compliance
  • Handle performance management, documentation, and disciplinary actions as needed
  • Post vacancies, screen candidates, conduct interviews, and complete onboarding tasks

Schedule & Work Conditions

Required Qualifications: VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires high school diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of one year of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance City Driving Standards. A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required. Special skills or equipment certification may also be required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with MVRS and Temetra routing software, and handheld devices. Experience with reading water meters. Experience with managing and coordinating a team of several persons. Experience with hand tools. Experience with windows 11, Word, and similar software.
