About This Position

Deputy General Counsel

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Deputy General Counsel in United States.
This role provides the opportunity to serve as a key legal advisor, supporting mission-driven initiatives while ensuring organizational compliance and risk mitigation. The Deputy General Counsel will provide broad in-house counsel across multiple areas, including contracts, intellectual property, nonprofit compliance, employment law, and regulatory matters. Acting as the first point of contact for day-to-day legal inquiries, you will independently triage, prioritize, and resolve routine legal requests while collaborating closely with the General Counsel on strategic matters. You will oversee contract lifecycles, develop practical guidance and templates, and support employee trainings to enhance organizational legal awareness. Operating in a dynamic, remote-first environment, this role is central to maintaining continuity and integrity of legal operations while contributing to organizational growth and impact. The position balances high-level strategy with hands-on execution, influencing both internal operations and external partnerships.
Accountabilities:
  • Provide comprehensive legal counsel across a wide range of areas, including contracts, intellectual property, nonprofit and tax-exempt law, employment, antitrust, and regulatory compliance.
  • Serve as the primary contact for day-to-day legal inquiries, triaging and independently resolving routine issues while escalating higher-risk matters to the General Counsel.
  • Partner with organizational teams to assess and communicate legal risks, develop mitigation strategies, and implement internal controls.
  • Oversee the full lifecycle of contracts, including intake, drafting, review, negotiation, and risk assessment, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and mission.
  • Develop policies, legal memoranda, and playbooks to enhance operational consistency, efficiency, and compliance.
  • Support employee legal training, onboarding, and compliance education, ensuring understanding across teams.
  • Identify recurring legal and operational challenges, propose improvements, and implement process enhancements to strengthen legal workflows and organizational effectiveness.
Requirements:
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school and admission to the bar in at least one U.S. state.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant legal experience; prior in-house or nonprofit counsel experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise in nonprofit compliance, contract drafting and negotiation, risk management, and intellectual property law.
  • Familiarity with multistate and international operations, charitable registrations, fundraising, and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent judgment, ethics, and ability to provide strategic advice while exercising independent decision-making.
  • Strong communication skills to translate complex legal concepts for non-legal audiences.
  • Collaborative working style with a commitment to equity, inclusion, and organizational culture.
  • Comfortable working remotely within a high-performing, mission-driven environment.
  • Alignment with mission-driven goals such as public health, climate change, environmental sustainability, and alternative protein advancement is strongly preferred.
Benefits:
  • Competitive salary ($155,741$163,529, depending on experience and qualifications).
  • Remote-first work environment with flexibility for collaboration and organization retreats.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage.
  • 401(k) plan with employer match.
  • Paid time off including vacation, sick leave, family/parental leave, and 17 paid holidays.
  • Lifestyle spending account and opportunities for professional growth and advancement.
  • Supportive, respectful, and collaborative organizational culture.
