The Auto Liability Claims Director is responsible for leading the ongoing development, execution, and optimization of Auto Liability Claims operations. This position drives operational excellence, claims quality, compliance, and talent development across bodily injury (BI), first-party medical, uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM), and litigation-exposed claims. This role also emphasizes strong governance, vendor oversight, and collaboration across the organization to support sound business decisions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Establish and enhance the end-to-end operational strategy for auto liability claims, ensuring alignment with enterprise goals, regulatory requirements, and customer expectations.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on cycle time, severity management, leakage reduction, and customer outcomes.
- Partner with Actuarial, Underwriting, Legal, Compliance, and Product teams to ensure claims insight inform broader business decisions.
- Establish and enforce best-in-class claims handling standards across BI, Med Pay/PIP, UM/UIM and litigated claims.
- Ensure adherence to state-specific regulations, DOI expectations, and internal governance frameworks.
- Oversee quality assurance programs, file reviews, and corrective action plans to ensure consistent, defensible outcomes.
- Lead, coach, and develop senior managers and claim leaders; build strong bench strength and succession plans.
- Drive performance management practices that align individual outcomes with operation financial goals.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and ethical decision-making.
- Champion operational modernization, including workflow optimization, vendor strategy, and technology enablement.
- Partner with claims systems, analytics, and AI governance teams to ensure tools enhance—not compromise—claims quality and fairness.
- Evaluate and optimize external vendors (medical management, defense counsel, SIU, etc.)

EDUCATION
Bachelor’s Degree or higher required. Juris Doctorate preferred.
Equivalent experience may substitute for minimum educational requirements. Equivalent experience may include (12) twelve years of relevant experience.
EXPERIENCE
Minimum of ten (10+) plus years of relevant experience in auto liability claims required, including bodily injury and litigated exposures.
Proven success leading large, multi-layered claims organizations or complex operational portfolios with deep understanding of claims compliance, severity management, and regulatory risk required.
Exposure to multi-state operations and regulatory environments preferred.
