This position oversees and performs all day-to-day transactional work as well as higher-level accounting, compliance, reporting, and audit coordination.
This role is ideal for an experienced construction accounting professional who is comfortable operating independently, managing both administrative “busy work” and complex accounting functions, and serving as the Company’s internal and outward facing primary financial resource.
Ideally this position will grow into, and eventually play a pivotal role in strategic financial planning and preparation for future development in support of our organizational opportunities.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in construction accounting, be proficient in payroll processing, and have prior experience in a small company or startup environment where flexibility and self-direction are critical.
This individual ideally has the ability to tailor communication style to diverse audiences, translating financial information into clear, practical insights that help operational teams understand how their day-to-day decisions impact profitability and overall financial performance.
Key Responsibilities:
Daily & Transactional Accounting
Process and manage accounts payable and accounts receivable, including invoice entry, coding, approvals, and collections, and basic administrative organizationMaintain accurate general ledger entries and supporting documentationPerform bank, credit card, and loan reconciliationsManage vendor records, W-9s, and 1099 preparation and filingSupport job cost tracking and cost coding in coordination with operations and project management teamsPayroll & Benefits Administration
Process in-house full-cycle payroll accurately and on schedule, including prevailing wage or certified payroll requirements, as applicableMaintain payroll records, deductions, garnishments, and tax withholdingsCoordinate payroll-related filings and compliance (federal, state, and local)Partner with HR/Leadership on payroll changes, bonuses, and benefits deductionsConstruction Accounting & Job Costing
Maintain job cost systems and ensure costs are properly allocated and reportedSupport work-in-progress (WIP) reporting and job profitability analysisAssist leadership with cost controls, forecasting, and variance analysisCoordinate with project managers to resolve cost discrepancies and reporting questionsFinancial Reporting & Month-End Close
Perform monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processesPrepare internal financial statements and management reports, including full Summary of Contracts (Work in Progress or WIP)Ensure accuracy, consistency, and timeliness of financial dataMaintain accounting schedules, reconciliations, and supporting workpapersCompliance, Audits & External Coordination
Coordinate external audits, reviews, and requests from CPAs or auditorsSupport tax preparation by external accountants, including providing schedules and documentationEnsure compliance with applicable accounting standards, tax regulations, and industry requirementsMaintain internal controls appropriate for a small organizationAdministrative & Cross-Functional Support
Manage accounting systems, files, and financial documentationImprove and document accounting processes and workflows as neededServe as a financial resource to leadership, operations, and project teamsHandle miscellaneous administrative finance tasks as they ariseQualifications:
Required Qualifications
5–10 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in constructionDemonstrated experience operating as a solo finance/accounting professional or in a very lean teamStrong working knowledge of construction accounting, job costing, and payrollExperience processing in-house full cycle payrollProficiency with accounting software and Excel, preferably JobPower or similarHigh attention to detail with strong organizational and time-management skillsComfortable balancing routine tasks with complex accounting responsibilities
Preferred Qualifications
Prior, recent experience as a Senior Staff Accountant, Accounting Manager, or hands-on ControllerExperience in a small business, family-owned company, or startup environmentDemonstrated experience supporting a company’s financial operations through sustained growth or operational evolution, ideally over a multi-year tenureFamiliarity with audits, WIP reporting, and construction-specific complianceCPA or equivalent experience (not required)Key Competencies & Attributes

Compensation & Benefits:
