Job Description

The Accounting Director is responsible for managing the organization’s accounting operations, financial reporting, and compliance with government, individual, corporation and foundation funding requirements. The Accounting Director will serve as the senior accounting professional responsible for day-to-day accounting oversight, grant management, audits, and financial reporting. The Accounting Director will supervise accounting staff and work closely with the CEO, COO, CDO, and program leadership to ensure that all financial activities align with nonprofit best practices and the requirements of city, state, and federal grants. The ideal candidate has strong nonprofit accounting experience and a demonstrated track record managing government grants, reimbursement-based contracts, and compliance reporting.
Responsibilities
Financial Management and Accounting Operations
Oversee all accounting operations including accounts payable, receivable, payroll coordination, and general ledger management
Maintain the integrity of the organization’s financial records and accounting systems
Manage monthly financial closings and ensure accurate financial reporting
Monitor organizational cash flow and provide financial analysis to leadership
Maintain and update the chart of accounts within QuickBooks Enterprise
Ensure all financial transactions are properly documented and coded
Grant and Contract Financial Management
Oversee financial management of city, state, and federal grants and contracts
Ensure compliance with grant budgets, allowable cost guidelines, and reporting requirements
Work closely with program managers to monitor grant spending and budget alignment
Track restricted funding and maintain accurate grant allocations
Prepare financial reports required by government agencies and private funders
Support reimbursement submissions and documentation for government contracts
Ensure readiness for grant monitoring visits and financial reviews
Budgeting and Financial Planning
Lead the preparation of the organization’s annual operating budget
Work with department heads to develop program budgets and financial forecasts
Monitor departmental spending against approved budgets
Provide financial analysis to support operational planning and funding decisions
Audit and Compliance
Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors and the outside CPA to coordinate the annual Form 990 and financial audit
Ensure audits are completed within six months of fiscal year-end and presented for Board review
Prepare audit schedules, supporting documentation, and respond to auditor requests
Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
Maintain and strengthen internal financial controls, policies, and procedures
Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local financial reporting requirements
Oversee payroll processes to ensure accuracy, compliance, and timely reporting
Staff Supervision and Department Leadership
Supervise accounting staff and oversee efficient day-to-day financial operations
Provide guidance, training, and professional development to accounting personnel
Establish and enforce clear accounting procedures and internal controls
Promote cross-department collaboration between finance, operations, and program teams
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field
Minimum 5–7 years nonprofit accounting experience
Demonstrated experience managing government grants (federal, state, or city)
Experience working with reimbursement-based contracts and grant reporting
Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
Experience coordinating annual financial audits
Experience managing reimbursement-based government contracts and preparing supporting financial documentation
Experience with QuickBooks Enterprise or similar nonprofit accounting systems
Experience managing multiple restricted grants and cost allocations across programs
Familiarity with nonprofit compliance requirements, grant monitoring, and audit preparation
Experience with payroll and HR systems such as Paychex Flex or Paycom
Familiarity with government grant and contract platforms such as Grants.gov, HHS Accelerator, or NYC Passport
Strong proficiency in Excel for financial analysis and grant tracking
Experience working in organizations with multiple programs and funding streams

This is a full-time position based in Brooklyn, NY. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required during board meeting, audit periods or financial deadlines.
