Summary
Civic Media is seeking an On-Air Music Host for our WIMI Station in Ironwood, Michigan. If you are organized, a self-starter, and love telling stories that matter to listeners and your community, then this is an ideal opportunity.
Your day will be spent engaging listeners with on-air topics that matter to their lives and to the community at large. Prior experience hosting an on-air talk show or music show is a plus, but not required. You should feel comfortable sharing your personal stories and opinions, while approaching every subject with an open mind and welcoming differing opinions.
Social Media integration for your program and our brand is expected, in addition to creating content for Civic Media's network of talk stations throughout the State of Wisconsin.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of an on-air host can vary depending on the type of show and the format of the station, but some common responsibilities may include:
- Hosting the show: The primary responsibility of an on-air host is to host the show from our local studio location. This involves creating content, preparing for the show, and presenting the show to the audience.
- Social Media: Work with Civic Media marketing and social media teams to promote your show and the network.
- Conducting research: On-air hosts must be knowledgeable about the topics they discuss on the show. Therefore, research is a crucial part of their job. They must be able to gather and analyze information and present it to their audience in an engaging and informative manner.
- Interviewing guests: Many shows feature guests who are experts in their field or individuals with interesting stories to tell. Hosts must be able to conduct interviews that are engaging, informative, and entertaining.
- Creating content: On-Air hosts must be creative and able to come up with interesting topics and ideas for their shows. They must also be able to develop segments and features that will keep the audience engaged.
- Engaging with the audience: On-air hosts must be able to engage with their audience and build a “personal connection” with them. This may involve telling personal (not private) stories, taking phone calls, reading emails, and interacting with listeners on social media. Host may also attend paid and unpaid off-site events.
- Adhering to FCC regulations: On-air hosts must follow FCC regulations regarding content, language, and advertising. They must also ensure that their content is appropriate for the time of day as well as their target audience.
- Managing time: On-air hosts must be able to manage their time effectively and ensure that the show runs smoothly. They must be able to stay on schedule and transition between segments and topics seamlessly. Occasionally, show hosts will also work some nights and weekends.
- Working with producers: On-air hosts may work with producers who help them develop content, book guests, and manage the technical aspects of the show. Hosts must be able to work closely with their producers and communicate effectively to ensure the success of the show.
Qualifications
- 3-5 years full-time experience of hosting an on-air radio music show
- Background in journalism and keen interest in current events, news, and politics
- Basic production abilities and the ability edit digital audio and familiarity of digital audio play out systems
- Ability to interview local government officials, business owners, and other local people
- Local focus and community connections
- Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
