About This Position
Position Summary
The 5th Grade ELA Teacher is responsible for delivering rigorous and engaging instruction in reading, writing, speaking/listening, and language development for 5th grade students. The teacher will implement lessons aligned to Florida B.E.S.T. Standards, use student achievement data to drive instruction, and support students in mastering grade-level literacy skills, including comprehension of complex texts, writing in multiple genres, vocabulary development, and academic discourse.
Key Responsibilities Instruction & Curriculum Delivery
Plan and deliver daily 5th grade ELA instruction aligned to Florida B.E.S.T. Standards and school pacing guides.
Teach key literacy strands including:
Reading comprehension (literary and informational texts)
Text structure, theme, main idea, and supporting details
Vocabulary development and word analysis
Grammar, usage, and mechanics
Writing across genres (informative/explanatory, narrative, opinion/argument)
Support student mastery of writing process skills including planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.
Lead structured student discussions using accountable talk strategies and academic vocabulary.
Integrate reading/writing assignments to support content learning in Science and Social Studies.
Intervention & Differentiation
Differentiate instruction based on student needs, IEPs, 504 Plans, and ELL supports.
Provide small group instruction, targeted remediation, and enrichment.
Implement interventions for students performing below grade level and document progress.
Assessment & Data-Driven Instruction
Administer, score, and analyze academic assessments (FAST, iReady, unit assessments, writing prompts, etc. depending on school requirements).
Use student data to plan lessons, group students, and adjust instruction.
Maintain accurate student grades, assessment records, and progress monitoring documentation.
Classroom Management & Student Engagement
Establish and maintain a safe, respectful, and orderly classroom environment.
Implement schoolwide discipline procedures and positive behavior strategies.
Encourage high expectations, student ownership, and responsibility in learning.
Build strong rapport with students and promote a culture of literacy and achievement.
Collaboration & Communication
Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), grade-level meetings, and data chats.
Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and academic needs.
Collaborate with ESE specialists, ELL support staff, counselors, and school leadership.
Participate in parent conferences, school events, and professional development as required.
Professional Responsibilities
Maintain professional integrity, confidentiality, punctuality, and consistent attendance.
Prepare lesson plans and instructional materials as required.
Follow district, school, and state policies and procedures.
Demonstrate continuous improvement and commitment to professional growth.
Required Qualifications
Bachelors degree from an accredited college/university (Education preferred)
Eligible to work in the United States
Ability to pass:
Level 2 background screening
Drug screening (if required by school/district)
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Experience working with children in a classroom or instructional environment
Preferred Qualifications
Valid Florida Teaching Certificate (Professional or Temporary) in:
Elementary Education (K6), OR
English/Language Arts (Grades 59), OR
Reading (K12)
Prior experience teaching ELA at the upper elementary level (3rd5th)
Reading Endorsement or Reading Certification
Demonstrated success improving reading levels and writing proficiency
Experience in structured literacy instruction and test preparation support
Skills & Competencies
Strong knowledge of upper elementary ELA standards and instruction
Ability to teach writing with clear rubrics and feedback
Strong classroom management and student engagement strategies
Data-driven mindset and instructional flexibility
Ability to build positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues
Work Schedule
MondayFriday (School Hours)
Occasional evenings for parent conferences and school events
Compensation
Compensation is commensurate with experience, education, certification, and assignment duration. (Optional: include salary range or daily rate based on your staffing contract.)
