What You’ll Do

You will report to the Laboratory Manager or Coordinator (BMG). You will ensure that lab requisitions are appropriately completed and authorized, and obtain pertinent patient information for laboratory records and/or billing purposes. You will perform general office/clerical responsibilities.

Lab Assistant Job Responsibilities

  • Maintain daily patient logs, laboratory orders, test results, and required records in accordance with documentation and retention policies.
  • Collect and receive patient specimens for laboratory testing, including blood, urine, and other body fluids.
  • Perform diagnostic tests such as EKGs, spirometry, audiometry, breath alcohol testing, and other authorized laboratory analyses.
  • Ensure accurate billing documentation by recording laboratory charges and verifying associated diagnoses.
  • Maintain laboratory quality control, calibration, maintenance, and proficiency testing records; document corrective actions as needed.
  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness and follow OSHA guidelines for infection control, body fluid precautions, and contaminated waste disposal.
  • Provide professional patient service by greeting patients and visitors, answering phone calls, relaying messages, and collecting required patient information for records and billing.
  • Participate in department meetings and remain accountable for shared information.
  • Complete required education, competencies, employee health requirements, and maintain all required licenses, certifications, and registrations.
  • Maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required for patient care roles.
  • Follow universal precautions, use appropriate protective equipment, and apply safe ergonomic techniques.
  • Adhere to regulatory requirements and organizational and departmental policies.
  • Perform additional job-related duties as assigned and maintain flexibility to work overtime or alternate schedules as needed.

What You Bring

As a Lab Assistant, this role requires knowledge of medical terminology and basic laboratory procedures, including the ability to perform phlebotomy and routine lab testing. The position also requires proficient typing and computer skills, as well as a basic understanding of billing and business office procedures. Strong communication and telephone skills are essential to greet patients and answer calls in a pleasant, clear, concise, and helpful manner. The role further requires the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, team members, and the public

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a phlebotomy training program or experience preferred.
  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of high school diploma (with courses in mathematics and some biological sciences preferred).
  • Minimum of one year of patient care, customer service, general office/clerical or related experience is preferred.
  • Qualifies as testing personnel for moderate complexity testing as defined in CFR.493.1423.
