Position Overview

The Lead Direct Support Professional (Lead DSP) is a hands-on leadership role within our day services and community-based programs. This position provides direct support to individuals while serving as a shift leader and role model for DSP staff. The Lead DSP ensures daily operations run smoothly, individuals are actively engaged in meaningful activities, documentation is completed accurately, and staff are supported and guided throughout the day.

This role is ideal for someone who is organized, dependable, confident in leadership, and passionate about both direct care and team coordination.

Primary Responsibilities

Direct Support & Individual Care


Provide direct, person-centered support to individuals with developmental disabilities in day site and community settings
Support individuals with daily living skills, social engagement, and participation in structured activities
Encourage independence, choice, dignity, and self-advocacy
Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of individuals at all times

Leadership & Team Support


Serve as the lead DSP during assigned shifts
Model best practices and provide real-time guidance to DSP staff
Support new staff through on-the-job coaching and mentoring
Promote a positive, respectful, and team-oriented work environment

Program & Daily Operations


Coordinate daily schedules, activities, and staffing assignments
Oversee community outings, volunteer opportunities, and transportation logistics
Ensure individuals are engaged in meaningful, age-appropriate, and goal-driven activities
Assist with staffing coverage and operational needs as they arise

Documentation & Compliance


Ensure accurate, timely documentation in Therap and required systems
Review DSP documentation for completeness, accuracy, and compliance
Monitor and support implementation of ISP goals and safety plans
Report incidents, concerns, and changes in individual needs to supervisors promptly

Qualifications


High school diploma or GED required (additional education preferred)
Experience supporting individuals with developmental disabilities preferred
Prior leadership or lead DSP experience strongly preferred
Ability to work independently and make sound decisions
Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
Comfortable using electronic documentation systems
Valid driver’s license and ability to transport individuals as needed

Requirements:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Preferred: 1+ year of experience in human services or working with individuals with developmental disabilities
  • Valid driver’s license and current auto insurance
  • Reliable transportation and a reliable means of communication (phone/cell phone)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to follow directions, complete assigned tasks, and identify situations requiring supervisor support
  • Must be able to pass criminal history, APS, CPS, and any other required background checks
Training Requirements
  • Ability and willingness to successfully complete and maintain all required trainings, including:
    • Medication Aide Training
    • CPR & First Aid
    • MANDT
    • Individual Rights Training
    • Abuse & Neglect Training
    • HIPAA & Confidentiality Training
    • Infection Control & Emergency Procedures
    • Any additional agency-required or state-required trainings
