Job Description

Position: Summer Camp Learning Facilitator

Position Level: Associate

Department: Education

Reports to: Director of Education

Other: Full-time, seasonal, hourly, non-exempt, early morning, and holiday work

Duration:
Camp sessions will run from June 22, 2026 through July 17, 2026. Staff are expected to work Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., including the week of July 4.

All camp staff are required to attend scheduled training sessions, preparation meetings, IAAM’s Juneteenth event, and post-camp debriefing and clean-up sessions. Dates for the 2026 training, prep, and debriefing/clean-up sessions are as follows:

  • May 18th (virtual staff meeting)
  • May 19th-23 (self-paced virtual training modules)
  • June 9 (in-person training)
  • June 16 (in-person training)
  • June 17 (virtual parent orientation)
  • June 18 (in-person prep)
  • June 19 (in-person event: Juneteenth)
  • June 20 (in-person prep)
  • June 21 (in-person prep)
  • July 18 (in-person debrief/clean-up)

Job Summary

The Summer Campe Learning Facilitator engages with children ages 8 to 13 and immerses them in the rich history and culture of the African American experience. This position offers a unique opportunity to inspire the next generation through educational and interactive programming within the Museum setting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Facilitate Educational Activities: Facilitate educational activities, workshops, and interactive sessions that explore various aspects of African American history, culture, and heritage
  • Supervise Campers: Provide guidance, supervision, and support to campers throughout their camp experience, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times.
  • Learn and Implement Curriculum: Learn and implement the curriculum and lesson plans designed by the Summer Camp Manager to adhere to the program’s mission and educational goals.
  • Promote Inclusivity and Diversity: Foster an inclusive and welcoming environment that celebrates diversity, encourages dialogue and promotes understanding of different perspectives and experiences.
  • Assist with Tours: Assist Museum Educators with tours of the museum.
  • Encourage Critical Thinking: Encourage critical thinking curiosity, and exploration among campers by facilitating discussions, asking thought-provoking questions, and encouraging active participation.
  • Collaborate with Team: Work collaboratively with the Summer Camp Manager to ensure the smooth operation of camp activities and address any issues or concerns that may arise.
  • Ensure Safety and Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols, guidelines, and procedures to ensure the well-being of campers, staff, and visitors at all times.
  • Provide Feedback: At the conclusion of camp, offer constructive feedback and evaluation of camp activities, curriculum, camp management, and overall work experience to contribute to continuous improvement and development of future programming.
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures, standards, practices, regulatory compliance, and company directives including dress code and attendance.

Experience and Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Experience working with children ages 8 to 13 in a camp, school, after school, or recreational setting required.
  • Classroom teaching experience preferred.
  • Passion for African American history, culture, and heritage, with a desire to share knowledge and inspire others.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to multitask and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods standing and walking
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather
  • Must be able to bend, kneel, squat/stoop to perform tasks
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times
