This role is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing the core messaging infrastructure that powers large-scale, high-volume SMS and customer communication systems used by major ecommerce brands. You will lead a team of experienced engineers building and maintaining critical platform components, including automation workflows, campaign delivery systems, and messaging infrastructure used across multiple product lines. The environment is highly technical, distributed, and fast-scaling, requiring strong operational discipline and a deep understanding of reliability at scale. You will act as both a people leader and platform owner, ensuring engineering excellence while driving the evolution of systems that support billions of messages. This role also involves close collaboration with product, AI, infrastructure, and business teams to define technical direction and delivery priorities. It is a high-impact opportunity to shape foundational systems in a modern, AI-enabled SaaS ecosystem.
- Lead and grow a team of 8 engineers responsible for the messaging backbone, including Flow Builder, SMS campaign delivery systems, and messaging platform infrastructure
- Own the reliability, throughput, scalability, and cost efficiency of high-volume distributed messaging systems
- Operate the messaging platform as an internal product, defining contracts, priorities, and expectations with dependent engineering teams
- Manage on-call operations, incident response, postmortems, and continuous reliability improvements
- Collaborate with product, platform, AI, and business stakeholders to define and execute technical roadmaps
- Provide ongoing performance management, feedback, and career development for direct reports
- Mentor senior engineers and staff-level contributors, supporting technical and leadership growth
- Improve engineering processes, including development workflows, on-call structures, and incident management practices
- Partner with technical leaders to design and deliver scalable architecture and platform improvements
- Lead recruiting efforts, including hiring, evaluation, and onboarding of engineering talent
- Contribute to broader engineering culture initiatives and organizational development
- 4+ years of experience directly managing engineering teams, with a proven track record of developing senior and staff-level engineers
- Experience leading teams responsible for high-volume, mission-critical distributed systems (e.g., messaging, payments, or similar pipelines)
- Strong background in platform engineering or internal developer platforms used by multiple engineering teams
- Experience managing operational excellence, including on-call systems, incident response, observability, and SLOs
- Demonstrated ability to recruit, hire, and build high-performing engineering teams
- Strong leadership, communication, and people management skills with a focus on enabling team success
- Experience in high-growth SaaS or startup environments
- Familiarity with integrations involving external platforms, APIs, or service providers
- Comfortable working across backend and product-facing systems; exposure to frontend systems like dashboards or workflows is a plus
- Nice to have: experience with AI-driven systems (predictive or generative) and ecommerce/martech platforms
- Base salary range of USD $236,000–$268,000 plus significant equity opportunities
