nou Systems, Inc. (nSI) is now officially a 100% ESOP company! We value teamwork and collaboration, and this transition allows us to take that commitment to a new level. nSI empowers our customers by supplying products, services, and expertise with powerful, data driven insights that transform defense systems and improve capabilities.

nou Systems, Inc. (nSI) is seeking a highly skilled Senior Research Scientist / Engineer to support the U.S. Army Ronald Reagan Space and Missile Test Range (RTR). RTR supports increasingly complex missile, hypersonic, and space missions that require forward-looking technical expertise to assess emerging challenges, mature new concepts, and translate advanced research into operational capability.

While the Range Contractor executes day-to-day operations, nSI personnel work alongside RTR leadership, the Range Contractor, and mission partners such as MIT Lincoln Laboratory (MIT/LL) to evaluate future needs, identify technology opportunities, and shape modernization strategies across the range enterprise. The successful candidate will serve as a senior technical authority, helping bridge research, engineering, and mission operations to ensure RTR remains capable of meeting emerging national defense requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a senior technical expert supporting RTR leadership in the evaluation of advanced technologies, mission concepts, and future capability needs.
  • Conduct technical analyses and trade studies to assess new approaches for missile tracking, space domain awareness, instrumentation, data exploitation, and range modernization.
  • Provide independent research and engineering recommendations to inform long-term investment, experimentation, and operational planning.
  • Translate emerging science and technology developments into actionable options for RTR missions and architectures.
  • Support concept development, prototyping efforts, and technical risk reduction activities across the range enterprise.
  • Collaborate with RTR leadership, the Range Contractor, MIT/LL, and other mission partners to identify technical gaps and prioritize innovation efforts.
  • Contribute to mission analysis, post-mission assessments, and lessons learned to inform future system development and operational improvements.
  • Assess cross-domain integration opportunities spanning optical, radar, telemetry, software, and command-and-control systems.
  • Produce high-quality technical documentation, briefings, and decision support materials for senior stakeholders.
  • Track emerging technologies and research developments relevant to missile defense, hypersonics, space operations, and test infrastructure.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or related technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate complex technical problems and develop practical, mission-focused solutions.
  • Strong analytical and systems-thinking skills with experience conducting technical assessments and trade studies.
  • Experience working across government, contractor, FFRDC, or laboratory environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to brief senior technical and program leadership.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with missile defense, hypersonic systems, test ranges, or space mission operations.
  • Familiarity with instrumentation systems, mission data analysis, or model-based assessments.
  • Experience supporting technology transition from research to operational implementation.
  • Understanding of range architectures, distributed sensing, and multi-domain mission support.
  • Ability to operate effectively in highly collaborative, technically diverse environments.
