About This Position
This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Staff Machine Learning Scientist - Translational AI in the United States.
This role sits at the intersection of cutting-edge machine learning and real-world biomedical impact, focusing on how foundation models can transform translational research and clinical decision-making. You will lead the application of multimodal AI across genomics, pathology, and clinical datasets to unlock insights in oncology and other disease areas. Operating with high autonomy, you will shape modeling strategies while remaining hands-on in experimentation, representation learning, and model interpretation. This position offers the opportunity to influence scientific direction across multiple initiatives and collaborate with top-tier experts in bioinformatics, clinical science, and ML engineering. Your work will directly contribute to biomarker discovery, patient stratification, and therapeutic development. The environment is highly collaborative, research-driven, and mission-oriented, with a strong emphasis on translating AI breakthroughs into measurable clinical value.
In this role, you will define and lead the scientific and technical strategy for applying foundation models to translational and clinical challenges in biomedical domains, ensuring outputs are biologically meaningful and clinically actionable. You will work across research and engineering teams to design, evaluate, and refine ML systems that integrate multimodal biological and clinical data.
- Lead the development and adaptation of foundation models for genomics, pathology, transcriptomics, and multimodal biomedical datasets
- Define modeling strategies that connect pretrained models to translational use cases such as biomarker discovery, therapy response prediction, and patient stratification
- Design and implement fine-tuning, probing, and representation learning approaches to extract biologically relevant insights
- Build robust evaluation frameworks linking model performance to clinical relevance, robustness, and real-world applicability
- Identify model limitations, bias, and uncertainty, and develop mitigation strategies for clinical-grade reliability
- Collaborate with translational scientists, clinicians, and engineers to translate scientific questions into AI-driven solutions
- Contribute to scientific communication through publications, presentations, and internal leadership updates
The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in machine learning applied to biological or clinical domains, with a strong record of scientific leadership and the ability to translate complex models into meaningful biomedical insights. You combine theoretical rigor with practical implementation skills and thrive in cross-functional, research-intensive environments.
- PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field
- 5+ years of experience applying machine learning to genomic, clinical, or biomedical data (oncology, immunology, or translational medicine preferred)
- Strong experience with foundation models, representation learning, self-supervised learning, or deep sequence modeling
- Proven ability to translate ML outputs into biological or clinical insights beyond standard performance metrics
- Advanced proficiency in PyTorch and modern ML tooling (e.g., HuggingFace Transformers, PEFT, Captum, MLflow)
- Experience working with multimodal datasets (e.g., genomics, imaging, clinical records) is highly valued
- Strong scientific leadership, mentorship, and cross-team collaboration experience
- Excellent communication skills with a track record of publications or technical presentations
- Competitive salary range ($163,000–$201,000 USD, depending on experience and location)
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage
- Life, disability, and additional employee protection benefits
- 401(k) retirement savings plan
- Fertility and family-forming support benefits
- Paid parental leave and baby bonding leave
- Employee testing benefits for eligible services
- Flexible work arrangements (remote within the United States)
- Employee referral programs and additional wellness benefits
