About This Position

The Garner Public Works Department is looking to hire a candidate to work as a Park Attendant within the Custodial Division. This person will take the lead in maintaining a brand-new community space (Yeargan Park), ensuring it remains clean, safe, and welcoming. This is a hands-on Custodial position for someone who takes pride in their work, enjoys being outdoors, and values independence.

In this role, you’ll perform a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks to care for and maintain park facilities. Duties Including but not limited to cleaning restrooms, trash control, and other related work orders. From keeping high traffic areas spotless to identifying and addressing maintenance needs, your attention to detail will help create a positive and lasting impression for every visitor.

This position is a full-time position that will report to the Custodial Supervisor. The chosen candidate will be willing to work a flexible schedule and work different shifts including days, evenings, weekends, and Town holidays. This position is to be also responsible for closing/opening the park. Applicants must be dependable and prompt, and able to work weekday evenings from 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. (2 days a week) and weekends from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. (with a two-hour lunch).

Examples of Duties:

  • Perform general custodial duties on public recreational complexes, athletic facilities, and restrooms. Prompt opening and closing of all park and facility gates and bathrooms.
  • Perform a variety of maintenance tasks such as using power hand equipment, repairs to bathroom amenities, and remove leaves and debris from sidewalks on facility grounds.
  • Main tasks include picking up trash at all locations; operating equipment; shelter maintenance; custodial duties; playground and dog park maintenance; sidewalk and common area blowing; and any other maintenance in the Parks and Grounds Division.
  • Patrolling Town parks to provide a visible authority presence while ensuring park rules are being followed.
  • Prepare restrooms for use including cleaning sinks and countertops, toilets, mopping floors, removing webs and dust, and refilling products appropriately.
  • Ensure Park shelters are prepared and cleaned for rentals.
  • Respond to any calls from residents and other departments within the Town. Assist with delivering items for small scale special events.
  • Ability to operate a standard non CDL vehicle.
  • Perform related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a valid driver's license and good driving record
  • Be knowledgeable in the safe use and operation of the equipment to which assigned
  • Be able to understand and follow specific oral instructions
  • Be able to perform manual labor for extended periods in all weather conditions
  • Be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and residents
  • Be able to work effectively and independently
  • Be able to safely lift 50 lbs.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Prior custodial/janitorial experience is preferred.

  • The salary range shown is the hiring range. The starting salary will be determined based on the selected candidate's skills and qualifications.
