JOB SUMMARY
The Clinical Supervisor provides operational leadership and strategic oversight for the Internal Medicine Clinic at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. This role ensures high-quality operations that support clinical excellence, regulatory compliance, service excellence, and financial performance. The Clinical Supervisor is responsible for daily clinical staff leadership, clinic workflows, performance improvement, and alignment with organizational goals. Time allocation is expected to be approximately 75% administrative responsibilities and 25% frontline duties, based on operational needs.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Supervisor duties and responsibilities include:
Demonstrates effective leadership behaviors that guide and support the healthcare team. Provides daily oversight and general direction to clinic staff for daily operations, staffing, clinic workflows, huddles, safety, and quality matters. Demonstrates flexibility, organization, humility, and professionalism in all interactions. Demonstrates strong communication, conflict resolution, and leadership skills. Creates a welcoming, calm, and supportive atmosphere for patients in the clinic. Ensures high level of performance standards and achievement to meet clinical goals, organizational needs, and business goals. Possesses a deep understanding of patient care, treatment planning, and evaluation. Implements and monitors adherence to evidence-based clinical best practice consistent with organizational and national practice standards.
Service Excellence
- Works with the Clinic Leader to foster teamwork, open communication, and continuous process improvement.
- Treats patients and their families with respect while addressing their psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs.
- Maintains strong relationships within and across departments to ensure smooth operations.
- Uses professional communication etiquette in both verbal and written interactions.
- Assists with patient service needs and participates in service recovery efforts by addressing concerns with empathy and practical solutions.
Professional Practice
- Adheres to the ten rights of medication administration to prevent errors.
- Works effectively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure seamless patient care.
- Promotes a safe environment by minimizing healthcare errors and ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
- Conducts comprehensive head-to-toe assessments and reassessments per policy and unit-specific guidelines. Accurately assesses and manages pain using pharmacological and non-pharmacological techniques.
- Demonstrates effective leadership and assists with scheduling appointments, admissions, and medical procedures.
- Efficiently manages patient and stakeholder communications.
- Utilizes tools to support clinic operations and maintain accurate records.
- Supports providers during procedures and physical exams, including minor tasks such as wound care and dressing applications.
- Provides patients with care instructions as directed by healthcare providers.
Quality & Compliance
- Acts as a bridge between patients, families, healthcare providers, and administration, ensuring clear communication and coordination.
- Engages patients and families in their care plans to enhance participation and outcomes.
- Maintains accurate and compliant documentation per current standards and policies.
- Provides treatments and services within the defined scope of practice, demonstrating competency and adherence to professional standards.
- Facilitates clear and professional communication among all healthcare team members to enhance patient care.
- Assists clinical staff with procedures and provides technical and manual support as per training and scope of practice.
- Promptly reports incidents, near misses, adverse events, and any issues impacting patient safety and care quality. Assists Clinic Leader with investigation and assessment of safety events.
Process Improvement & Risk Management
- Assists in the development of performance improvement (PI) activities. Educates staff on the PI process. Participates in PI data collection, indicator development, and evaluation criteria, etc. Maintains appropriate quality control programs.
- Contributes to the development and revision of departmental procedures for enhanced efficiency.
- Aligns with patient safety goals and ensures compliance with best practices. Participates in safety reporting, root cause analysis of safety events and logging into the electronic safety reporting system.
- Engages in process improvement, quality initiatives, and risk mitigation efforts.
- Recognizes potential risks and suggests practical solutions for improvement.
- Ensures all rules and regulations are observed by employees, to include overall organizational compliance and compliance with JC standards.
Staff Training and Development
- Coordinate orientation and training for new employees to ensure ongoing staff education.
- Provide ongoing coaching, feedback, and performance management to ensure staff development and accountability. Develop and implement teaching/training plans based on identified needs.
- Supports competency development, coaching, and training for all staff. Formulates a teaching plan based on identified needs of staff, evaluating the effectiveness of the learning. Supervise the design, development, and dissemination of training materials, manuals, and reference guides.
- Provides development opportunities for staff to broaden and enhance skills and abilities.
Additional Essential Functions
- Collaborates with the Clinic Leader in staff selection, orientation, performance evaluations, and development planning.
- Assists the Clinic Leader with annual and 90-day performance evaluations.
- Manages daily provider and clinical staff schedules, ensuring adequate coverage while aligning with budgeted standards.
- Plans coverage for sick calls and staffing in coordination with the Clinic Leader.
- Provide direct and indirect patient care in the department setting when patient census and staffing require.
- Supports the clinic’s sustainability initiatives by optimizing cost-effectiveness.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS — Education, Experience & License
- High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) required.
- RNs — Current Wyoming license as a Registered Nurse without restrictions.
- LPNs — Current LPN Licensure in the State of Wyoming without restrictions.
- MAs — Graduate of a formal medical assistant program accredited by the CAAHEP or ABHES and Certified, or a Registered Medical Assistant.
- BLS, required.
- A minimum of 2 years nursing/clinical experience preferred
- Medical terminology course, preferred.
