The RMP Promise

Rocky Mountain Prep is a movement of educators, families, scholars, and advocates committed to changing public education in Colorado by democratizing college access for historically marginalized students and families. We operate twelve college-preparatory schools serving students from early childhood through twelfth grade, and we are fundamentally a world-class learning organization that invests deeply in every educator who joins us. Our Approach to Teaching High School Spanish

At Rocky Mountain Prep, high school Spanish is a pathway to biliteracy, cultural fluency, and expanded opportunity. We design rigorous, engaging learning experiences that develop students’ proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening while affirming the linguistic assets of both Heritage and Non-Heritage Spanish speakers. Our program honors students’ lived experiences and home languages, building on what they already know while accelerating them toward advanced levels of academic language and analytical thinking. Through aligned coursework grounded in authentic texts, meaningful discourse, and culturally sustaining practices, students deepen their understanding of the diverse histories, identities, and global contributions of Spanish-speaking communities. Differentiated pathways ensure that every scholar is appropriately challenged and supported, whether beginning their language journey or refining existing fluency. By graduation, students are prepared to pursue advanced study, engage confidently across cultures, and earn the DPS Seal of Biliteracy as a testament to their academic achievement and multilingual excellence.

Spanish Teachers at Rocky Mountain Prep will...

  • Design and deliver rigorous, proficiency-based instruction aligned to high school standards that develops advanced skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
  • Differentiate intentionally for Heritage and Non-Heritage speakers, leveraging students’ linguistic assets and providing targeted scaffolds and acceleration pathways.
  • Create culturally sustaining classrooms that affirm diverse Spanish-speaking identities and challenge dominant narratives through authentic texts and inquiry.
  • Develop clear, grade-level exemplars and provide actionable, timely feedback that moves students toward mastery of complex language skills.
  • Use data to monitor language growth, plan strategic re-teaching, and ensure all scholars progress toward advanced coursework and the Seal of Biliteracy.
  • Incorporate immersive, real-world language experiences—including discourse, debate, literature, media, and interdisciplinary connections—to cultivate deep engagement.
  • Build students’ academic vocabulary, reading comprehension, and analytical writing skills through research-based literacy practices embedded in language instruction.
  • Partner closely with families, honoring home language practices and communicating student progress with clarity and respect.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and student support teams to ensure equitable access to rigorous instruction and targeted interventions for all learners.
