Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse, the ED Technician assists the nursing staff in the care of patients. The ED Tech is responsible for performing a variety of direct and indirect patient care activities as delegated by the Registered Nurse.
I. Major Responsibilities:
Patient Care Support
1. Assists patients with activities of daily living (e.g., hygiene, ambulation, toileting, nourishment).
2. Obtains specimens and performs measurements (e.g., vital signs, EKGs, blood glucose).
3. Assists in exams and treatments (e.g., CPR, IV discontinuation, sterile tray setup).
4. Applies protective and therapeutic devices as instructed.
5. Transports patients and equipment safely.
6. Answers call lights and responds to patient needs.
7. Participates in maintaining a safe environment and de-escalating patients when necessary.
Operational Support
1. Maintains and cleans equipment.
2. Stocks and prepares rooms with necessary supplies.
3. Cleans rooms and stretchers between patients using hospital-approved disinfectants.
Communication and Documentation
1. Communicates clearly and promptly with RNs regarding patient status.
2. Documents all care activities in the medical record.
3. Reports physical or behavioral changes in patients to the RN.
Age-Specific Competency
1. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served.
II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. High School Diploma or equivalent
2. Certification or licensure in one of the following: Nurse Aide, Medical Assistant, EMT/EMT-I
3. Current CPR certification
4. Nursing students who have completed their first clinical rotation may be considered equivalent to Nurse Aide Certification
Preferred:
1. None specified
Required:
1. Previous experience in a medical-related field
2. Knowledge of medical terminology
Preferred:
1. None specified
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:
Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a normal office environment.
