Position Summary

The Middle School Design & Innovation Lab Teacher (Grades 6–8) leads hands-on, project-based learning that builds skills in design thinking, engineering, making, coding, technology fluency, and digital literacy/citizenship. This educator maintains a well-run, inspiring lab environment where students learn through experimentation, iteration, and authentic problem-solving. The role collaborates closely with Middle School colleagues and partners with the PS–5 Innovation Lab Teacher to support a coherent PS–8 innovation pathway.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and teach a developmentally appropriate, standards-aligned design and innovation curriculum.
  • Deliver project-based, experiential learning that strengthens curiosity, critical thinking, and real-world problem-solving.
  • Differentiate instruction to support and challenge a range of learners.
  • Integrate technology intentionally (e.g., coding, prototyping tools, research, data analysis) to deepen learning.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and inviting lab; manage materials, inventory, and timely lab set-up/take-down.
  • Assess and document student growth; maintain records; contribute to conferences, and report cards.
  • Collaborate with Middle School faculty to support interdisciplinary learning and authentic applications.
  • Communicate proactively with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Participate in meetings, professional development, and required school events.
  • Support enrollment/retention through tours and outreach; assist with special events.
  • Supervise lunch, recess, carline, or other duties as assigned.

Hours and Pay

  • BCD’s middle school teachers work traditional school hours (7:30 - 3:30)
  • Salary Range is $54,000- $84,000 annually depending on experience and education
  • This is an exempt position with excellent benefits and paid time off as outlined below

Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • At least three years of teaching experience, preferably in middle school.
  • Demonstrated strength in inquiry-based teaching, curriculum design, and interdisciplinary and/or project-based learning.
  • Experience developing and delivering a robust design/innovation curriculum.
  • Strong technology integration skills and comfort with relevant tools/learning technologies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including family communication and student progress reporting.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse community of students, families, and colleagues.
