Function/Duties of Position

We are seeking a dynamic individual to be a part of a behavioral health team to collaboratively improve the mental health of our current patients. This individual would work together with the patient’s primary oncologist/hematologist and other specialties as needed, such as child life, psychology, and psychiatry. The PNP will help with routine mental health screenings including but not limited to depression, anxiety, suicide risk, and ADHD. The PNP should be familiar with common screening tools used for above examples including but not limited to the PHQ-9, GAD-7, SCARED, ASQ, PSC, and Vanderbilt assessment scale. The PNP will provide options for medication management if warranted based on the on-going assessments of the primary social worker as well as per patient/family request. The PNP also will provide follow-up and continuity to evaluate progress and side effects. The PNP will be available for questions and concerns when they arise from said patients as well. The PNP should feel comfortable discussing sensitive topics with patients of all ages as well as identifying patients that could benefit from additional mental health services.

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Assist with distributing and interpreting routine mental health screenings.
  • Follow up with patients that are at higher risk based on routine screenings.
  • Work closely with primary social workers to identify patients that may benefit from medication management/counseling.
  • Provide virtual or in-person consultations to discuss options for medication options for more commonly seen mental health diagnoses that would be safe based on current and up-coming oncologic treatment as well as counseling on side effects.
  • Provide virtual or in-person follow-up to assess side effects and/or need to adjust doses of medications.
  • Be available via MyChart for additional follow-up questions as needed.
  • Refer patients to other mental health professionals as necessary (mostly in-/outpatient psychiatry) if complex or multiple psychiatric conditions exist.

Education/Advocacy:

  • Provide clinical education to fellows, residents, medical and APP students participating in pediatric rotations.

Scholarship/Research:

  • PNP faculty are expected to have a scholarly activity. This may include educating learners, research, grant supported work, quality improvement projects, academic papers and/or presentations in disciplines related to their field of expertise.
  • PNP faculty members are often called upon to partner with other providers, members of the department, or division-based research support staff in research activity.

Administrative Activities:

  • Participation in faculty meetings at the division, department, and APP level.
  • Attending relevant conferences/committees as assigned by Division head or lead APP.
  • Academic and professional development through attendance and/or participation at national/regional conferences is strongly encouraged.

Required Qualifications

Nurse Practitioner:

  • Current Acute Care/Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner license for the state of Oregon
  • Previous experience focused on Pediatric mental health or Pediatric Mental Health Specialist certification
  • Appropriate National board certification
  • State of Oregon Nurse Practitioner Prescriptive Privileges
  • DEA license
  • Ability to manage a heavy workload with multiple priorities and inflexible deadlines
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally, and in writing
  • Proficient in the use of computing hardware and software, including personal computing equipment, electronic medical record, word processing, and spreadsheet software
  • Regular and consistent attendance at work
