REPORTS TO: Shop Foreman/Service Supervisor

EFFECTIVE DATE: March 2026

SUMMARY: The Small Engine Repair Technician is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of small engine equipment and light fleet assets to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations. This role supports both shop and occasional field-based work and plays a key role in minimizing downtime and extending equipment life across maintenance and construction operations..DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Equipment Maintenance & Repair
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on small engine equipment including lawn mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, compactors, generators, and other landscape/construction tools.
  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues using appropriate diagnostic tools and methods.
  • Complete preventative maintenance and scheduled servicing in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
  • Troubleshoot and repair engines (2-stroke and 4-stroke), fuel systems, ignition systems, and electrical components.
  • Repair or replace defective components and ensure all work meets quality standards.
2. Field Service & Troubleshooting
  • Respond to field service calls and equipment breakdowns as required.
  • Perform on-site diagnostics and minor repairs to minimize operational downtime.
  • Support seasonal demands, including extended hours during peak maintenance and snow operations.
  • Maintain service vehicle, tools, and parts inventory in a clean and organized manner (if applicable).
3. Welding & Fabrication (Asset)
  • Perform minor fabrication and repair work on equipment components as required.
  • Assist with reinforcing or modifying equipment to extend service life.
  • Apply safe welding practices where applicable (experience considered an asset).
4. Documentation & Work Order Coordination
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, inspections, preventative maintenance, and parts usage.
  • Complete work orders in a timely and detailed manner.
  • Coordinate with operations teams to prioritize repairs and ensure efficient turnaround of equipment.
5. Safety & Compliance
  • Adhere to all company safety policies, procedures, and Alberta OHS regulations.
  • Conduct hazard assessments and ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop environment.
6. Team Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
  • Work closely with operators and supervisors to identify recurring equipment issues and implement solutions.
  • Provide input on equipment condition, lifecycle planning, and replacement needs.
  • Support general shop operations and assist team members as required.
9. General
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience: Minimum two (2) years of experience in small engine repair or related mechanical work.

    • Experience with landscaping, construction, or snow removal equipment is preferred.

    • Strong working knowledge of small engines, fuel systems, and electrical components.

  • Education & Certification: Outdoor Power Equipment Technician – Power Equipment certification or equivalent hands-on experience preferred.
    • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License required.
    • OEM certifications (e.g., Stihl, Husqvarna) considered an asset.

  • Regulatory Knowledge: Working knowledge of Alberta OHS regulations and safe work practices.

    • WHMIS certification or awareness required; TDG considered an asset.

    • Understanding of safe handling of fuels, oils, and hazardous materials.

  • Systems & Technical Experience: Proficient in the use of diagnostic tools, service manuals, and schematics.

    • Experience with fleet maintenance or work order systems is an asset.

    • Basic welding/fabrication skills considered an asset.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Work performed primarily in a shop environment with occasional outdoor exposure.

  • Frequent lifting (up to 50 lbs), standing, bending, and use of hand and power tools.

  • Exposure to noise, fumes, and mechanical hazards.

  • Overtime may be required during peak seasons.
