About This Position

Description:

An Orthopaedic Surgical Authorization Coordinator is responsible for obtaining and managing insurance authorizations for orthopaedic procedures, ensuring all required documentation is complete, and coordinating with providers, patients, and insurance companies to facilitate timely surgical care.Communicates with patients in regards to their out of pocket amount and collects prior to surgery.

  • Obtain prior authorizations for orthopaedic surgeries, procedures, and imaging.
  • Submit clinical documentation to insurance carriers for approval.
  • Follow up on pending authorizations to prevent delays in care.
  • Handle denials, appeals, and resubmissions.
  • Work closely with physicians, surgical schedulers, and clinical staff.
  • Ensure all authorizations are secured before scheduled surgery dates.
  • Coordinate timelines to align approvals with surgical schedules.
  • Communicate any authorization issues that may impact surgery.
  • Ensure compliance with insurance guidelines, HIPAA, and organizational policies.
  • Update electronic medical records (EMR) with authorization details.
  • Track expiration dates of authorizations and renew as needed.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Performs other office duties as assigned.

Requirements:
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, especially orthopaedics.
  • Understanding of insurance processes (prior authorizations, CPT/ICD-10 codes).
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Experience with EMR systems and insurance portals (Athena preferred)
Preferred Experience
  • Background in orthopaedics, surgery scheduling, or medical billing.
  • Six months previous medical office experience.
  • Familiarity with major insurance providers (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid, commercial plans).
  • Experience handling high-volume authorization workflows.
