About This Position

The Payroll Generalist is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely processing of payroll for all employees while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This role supports payroll operations, audits, reporting, and serves as a point of contact for employee payroll inquiries. The Payroll Generalist works closely with HR, Accounting/Finance, and department managers to ensure data integrity and seamless payroll administration.

Key Responsibilities

Payroll Processing

  • Process bi-weekly/weekly/semi-monthly payroll for exempt and non-exempt employees.
  • Review and validate hours worked, overtime, PTO, leaves of absence, bonuses, and commissions.
  • Audit payroll reports for accuracy prior to final submission.
  • Review payroll inputs from HRIS, timekeeping, and benefit systems.

Compliance & Recordkeeping

  • Ensure payroll practices comply with federal, state, and local tax and labor laws (FLSA, wage garnishments, deductions, etc.).
  • Maintain employee payroll records and documentation.
  • Support year‑end processing including W‑2s, W‑4 updates, and tax filings.

Reporting & Reconciliation

  • Prepare payroll reports for Finance, HR, auditors, and leadership.
  • Reconcile payroll accounts and resolve discrepancies.
  • Assist with payroll system audits and process improvements.

Employee Support

  • Respond to employee questions regarding pay, deductions, taxes, and timekeeping.
  • Provide guidance on payroll policies and procedures.
  • Communicate payroll deadlines and updates as needed.

System Administration

  • Support configuration, testing, and updates of payroll systems and related HRIS modules.
  • Troubleshoot system issues and submit cases to vendors when necessary.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Accounting, Business, or related field preferred.
  • 2 years of payroll experience required; multi-state payroll experience preferred.
  • Experience with payroll/HRIS platforms (ADP, Paycom, UKG, Ceridian, Workday, etc.).

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Strong understanding of payroll regulations, tax laws, and FLSA.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficient in Excel and data analysis.
  • Excellent communication and customer‑service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality.
