Summary
The Transportation Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing company vehicles and transportation equipment to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient operation. This role performs diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and repairs on diesel and/or gasoline engines, trailers, forklifts, and related fleet equipment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance on company vehicles and mobile equipment, including engine services, lubrication, and inspections.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems using diagnostic tools, equipment manuals, and technical expertise.
- Repair or replace defective parts such as brakes, suspension components, steering systems, hydraulic pumps, fuel systems, radiators, belts, hoses, and batteries.
- Conduct DOT‑compliant inspections and ensure all vehicles meet safety and regulatory standards.
- Troubleshoot electrical systems, including lighting, wiring, alternators, and starters.
- Inspect and repair trailers, including landing gear, axles, brakes, tires, and structural components.
- Document all repairs and maintenance activities accurately in work‑order software or logs.
- Respond to equipment breakdowns and road calls as needed.
- Operate welding and cutting equipment for frame repairs, bracket fabrication, and minor structural work (if qualified).
- Ensure tools, parts, and service areas are maintained in clean and safe conditions.
- Follow all LOTO (Lockout/Tagout), safety procedures, and PPE requirements during all maintenance activities.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Competencies & Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training preferred.
- Minimum of 1–3 years of experience as a transportation, diesel, automotive, or fleet mechanic.
- Working knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, air brake, and cooling systems.
- Ability to read and interpret repair manuals, schematics, and technical diagrams.
- Familiarity with DOT, OSHA, and company fleet safety standards.
- Welding and fabrication skills a plus.
- Must provide own basic tools; specialty tools provided by company.
- Strong problem‑solving ability and mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
Work Environment
- Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts, heavy equipment, and vehicle traffic.
- Frequent exposure to grease, oil, fumes, dirt, and loud noise.
- Occasional outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
- May require working under vehicles, in pits, or in confined spaces.
Physical Demands
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds and handle heavy tools or equipment.
- Frequent standing, bending, crawling, kneeling, and working in tight spaces.
- Must be able to climb, balance, and work at various heights when required.
