Position Information


The Intellectual Property (IP) Paralegal will be primarily responsible for docketing, managing, tracking, and monitoring the UCR IP portfolio activities. Working as part of the Office of Technology Partnerships (OTP) within Research and Economic Development (RED), the IP Paralegal will assist with determining patentability of institution's inventions, including docketing, tracking, monitoring UCR patent portfolio activities, data entry into respective patent tracking and docketing software systems, assist with preparation and completion of patent documents and forms, track patent procedural requirements, timelines, and bar dates, and assist in monitoring UCR’s IP budget. The IP Paralegal will also be responsible for reporting inventions and ongoing patent prosecution status to all required sponsors.This position will report to the Assistant Director of Technology Commercialization and will collaborate closely with technology transfer professionals, legal counsel, industry partners, and UCR faculty and researchers. The full salary range for the IP Paralegal is $84,100 - $154,700 annually. However, the budgeted salary range for this position is $84,100 - $101,750. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs. Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff. As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.

Minimum Requirements
Working knowledge of and application of standard principles, theories and concepts such as laws, regulations, and practices pertaining to the protection and management of intellectual property, university technology transfer, and general scientific and/or technical skills in subject matter area.
Demonstrated familiarity of patent (U.S. and foreign, including PCT) prosecution procedures, timelines, laws and regulations. Working knowledge of required patent documents and forms in the patent prosecution process. Familiarity with U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Patent Center and similar systems.
Working knowledge of commercial patent docketing systems. Familiarity of UC patent tracking database, Wellspring Sophia, or comparably similar. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace suite (Word, Excel, Teams, Gmail, Drive, etc.).
Excellent communicator: includes verbal and written communications, active listening and critical thinking.
Strong interpersonal skills and a customer-service oriented individual who will be responsive to the needs of faculty, students, staff, entrepreneurs, industry partners, clients, attorneys, and patent office representatives.
Precise attention to detail, well organized, follow-through to conclusion of actions, with ability to identify errors, offer resolution, and to meet strict deadlines.
Demonstrated record as a team player within a diverse environment.
Self-starter with strong work ethic who can work well with others.
Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize assignments and work independently to complete assignments, responding appropriately to competing requirements and changing priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to market technology to industrial partners; knowledge of contracts and grants.
Experience with federally funded research, including proper reporting of inventions, electing to retain title, and filing patent applications, etc. using iEdison or other US government invention reporting forms.
Working knowledge of law firm billing practices. Demonstrated ability to carefully review and interpret a variety of legal invoices for legal work from law firms to assess correctness and accuracy.
