About This Position

Director, Technical Writing

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Director, Technical Writing in Canada.

This role offers the opportunity to redefine how technical documentation is created, structured, and experienced within a globally distributed, high-impact software organization.
You will lead a mature technical writing function through a period of transformation, with a strong focus on AI adoption, process redesign, and deeper integration with product and engineering teams.
The position involves shaping how documentation supports the user experience, making it more embedded, accessible, and actionable across the product ecosystem.
You will partner closely with Engineering, Product Management, and UX to shift documentation ownership earlier in the development lifecycle and improve overall quality and efficiency.
A key part of your mission will be evolving team structure, capabilities, and workflows to align with modern, AI-augmented content creation practices.
This is a strategic leadership role where you will directly influence how technical knowledge is created, shared, and consumed at scale.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead the technical writing organization through process transformation, improving how documentation is created, maintained, and integrated into product development workflows.
  • Drive AI adoption within the function by identifying opportunities to enhance documentation efficiency, quality, and scalability through intelligent tooling.
  • Partner with Engineering teams to embed documentation earlier in the development lifecycle and promote shared ownership of technical content.
  • Collaborate with Product Management and UX to improve how documentation is surfaced and consumed within the product experience.
  • Redesign team structure and operating models to ensure scalability, effectiveness, and alignment with evolving business priorities.
  • Guide the evolution of team skills, fostering adaptability, experimentation, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Improve the end-user documentation experience by prioritizing clarity, usability, and actionable content.
  • Define strategic direction for the function while providing practical solutions to complex documentation and workflow challenges.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience leading technical writing or documentation teams through organizational transformation or operating model change.
  • Strong understanding of AI tools and their practical application in content creation, workflow optimization, and knowledge systems.
  • Experience building strong cross-functional partnerships with Engineering, Product Management, and UX teams.
  • Ability to balance innovation with practicality, ensuring automation enhances rather than replaces human expertise.
  • Strong leadership experience in developing teams, setting direction, and managing change in distributed environments.
  • Excellent communication and asynchronous collaboration skills across global, remote-first organizations.
  • Solid technical credibility in documentation practices, including docs-as-code environments and developer-focused workflows.
  • Expertise in content strategy, information architecture, and aligning documentation with product and user needs.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to propose multiple viable solutions in complex or ambiguous situations.

Benefits:

  • Competitive compensation including base salary, equity, and performance-based incentives where applicable.
  • Flexible paid time off and supportive parental leave policies.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Equity compensation and employee stock purchase opportunities.
  • Growth and development funding to support continuous learning.
  • Remote-first working model with global collaboration opportunities.
  • Home office support and flexible work arrangements.
  • Inclusive culture with employee resource groups and wellbeing initiatives.
