CITY OF ALBANY HABITAT RESTORATION INTERNSHIP
The Program
The Public Works Department established the Habitat Restoration Intern Program to enhance the City’s understanding of the plant and animal communities on Albany Hill while promoting the development of healthier, more fire-resilient ecosystems.
The internship program is supported by grant funding from the California State Coastal Conservancy, which partners with local agencies to plan and implement projects that improve forest health and reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire in communities adjacent to wildlands.
Albany Hill, located on the western edge of the City of Albany near the shoreline of San Francisco Bay, is the City’s most prominent natural landmark.
Program Schedule and DurationThe selected intern will work an average of 15–20 hours per week for a period of 3–4 months between May and September. Start and end dates are flexible and may be adjusted to accommodate academic schedules and other commitments.
The Position
The City of Albany’s internship program is designed to provide meaningful, hands-on training that equips participants with practical experience and strengthens their competitiveness for entry-level positions in the workforce.
Under supervision, Habitat Restoration Interns assist in the study and stewardship of plant and animal communities on Albany Hill, while also helping educate the public about the area’s natural resources. Interns may choose to pursue specialized projects aligned with their interests or areas of expertise, under the guidance of the Natural Areas Manager.
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address city needs and changing city practices.
Identify and survey plants and animals and other organisms on Albany Hill using phone apps, such as iNaturalist, CalFlora, eBird.
Add entries to Field Guide of Native Plants and Animals.
Help with native plant restoration by seed collecting, planting, and propagating.
Work with the Urban Tilth Watershed Crew on tasks, such as weeding and trail repair.
Attend webinars and other educational events about environmental issues, environmental careers, and career development.
Create educational signage at restoration areas about the importance of native plants to wildlife and people.
Conduct walks, school outreach, and other educational events for the community about nature on Albany Hill, including plants, animals, traditional ecological knowledge, geology, or other related topics.
Participate in and/or conduct research of organisms or natural processes or interactions of people with nature on Albany Hill.
Participate in and/or conduct wildlife camera studies.
Prepare written and oral reports.
Perform duties as assigned.
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Education:
Possess, or will obtain by summer, a high school diploma or GED; AND
Currently enrolled in or attending college-level coursework in the sciences, including environmental studies, natural resources, biology, ecology, environmental engineering, environmental sociology, geology, geography, landscape architecture, horticulture, or related fields.
Experience:
No prior experience required.
Ideal Candidates:
Demonstrated interest in and curiosity about the natural world.
Eagerness to learn and develop new skills and knowledge.
Volunteer experience with community organizations or public agencies is desirable.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, with frequent walking, standing, bending, and stooping.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with solid research, interpersonal, and organizational abilities.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
