About This Position

Sawyer County is accepting applications for a full-time Deputy Register of Deeds

This position is responsible for receiving, recording, indexing, and maintaining legal documents related to property ownership, as well as administering government vital records. The Deputy Register of Deeds prepares required reports and provides assistance to government officials, business representatives, and members of the public in accessing and understanding recorded documents.

Qualifications

Experience interpreting legal documents, property records, legal descriptions, tax information, and maps

Ability to utilize the State Vital Records system

Proficiency in computer applications, including data entry, records management, and word processing

Working knowledge of Wisconsin Statutes and Administrative Code (Chapters 59, 69, 236, 703, and 706)

High school diploma or equivalent required

Associate degree in Office Administration or a related field preferred

Sawyer County offers a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, Wisconsin Retirement System, life insurance, vacation, sick leave, and holiday pay.

This is a 40-hour per week position with a beginning wage of $20.67 per hour.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Deputy Register of Deeds assists in administering the statutory duties of the Register of Deeds Office in accordance with Wisconsin State Statutes. This position is responsible for recording, indexing, maintaining, and providing access to real estate and vital records, while ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and compliance with applicable laws. The Deputy may perform the duties of the Register of Deeds in their absence.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Examine and record real estate documents for compliance with Wisconsin Statutes.
- Index, scan, and maintain official records for public access.
- Process Real Estate Transfer Returns (eRETR).
- Issue certified copies of vital records.
- Provide customer service to the public and agencies.
- Collect fees, balance receipts, and prepare deposits.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive records.
- Perform general clerical and administrative duties.
- Perform duties of the Register of Deeds as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate degree in related field preferred.
- Relevant office or records experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of Wisconsin Statutes Chapters 59, 69, 236, 703, and 706.
- Ability to interpret legal and real estate documents.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Proficiency in computer systems and office software.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.

PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

- Office setting with frequent computer use.
- Regular interaction with the public.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

- Ability to be bonded if required.
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
- Compliance with County policies.
