This senior leadership role is responsible for overseeing underwriting operations within a high-volume mortgage lending environment, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and strong service levels across conventional and government loan products. The VP of Underwriting will act as a key escalation point for complex loan scenarios, providing expert guidance and decision-making support to underwriting teams and branch operations. This role combines strategic oversight with hands-on problem solving, while ensuring adherence to regulatory guidelines and internal credit policies. In addition, the position focuses on team leadership, performance management, and continuous improvement of underwriting processes. It requires close collaboration with sales, operations, and senior leadership to maintain efficiency and customer service excellence. This is a high-impact role for an experienced underwriting leader in a fast-paced, growth-oriented lending organization.
- Lead and oversee underwriting operations for conventional, FHA, VA, and other mortgage loan products
- Serve as a senior escalation point for complex underwriting decisions and loan-level issues
- Ensure underwriting activities meet established service level agreements and production targets
- Provide expert guidance and decision support to underwriting teams and branch personnel
- Perform second-level loan reviews and ensure compliance with internal and regulatory standards
- Monitor underwriting pipeline performance and drive productivity and efficiency improvements
- Manage underwriting reporting, performance metrics, and operational dashboards
- Lead, coach, and mentor a team of underwriting professionals to ensure high performance and development
- Collaborate with sales and operations teams to resolve escalations and maintain strong customer service
- Participate in special projects, training initiatives, and process improvement efforts as needed
Requirements:
- 5+ years of mortgage underwriting experience across FHA, VA, USDA, and conventional loan products
- 3+ years of leadership or management experience within underwriting or credit operations
- Strong knowledge of agency guidelines including FHA, VA, and conventional lending standards
- Direct Endorsement (DE) status and/or VA SAR authority strongly preferred
- Solid understanding of ATR/QM requirements and mortgage compliance regulations
- Experience working with underwriting systems such as Encompass LOS is a plus
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with sound judgment in complex scenarios
- Proven ability to lead teams, coach underwriters, and drive performance in a high-volume environment
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills across operations and sales teams
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
