Critical Tasks:

  1. Directly supervise the lab technicians at all UNHS sites for scheduling, hiring, discipline, timesheets, evaluations, and competencies; following the guidance of the Laboratory System Medical Director (currently Dr. Jones) and the Laboratory System Technical Consultant (currently Dr. Cudkowitz) as well as the executive administration, and Human Resources.
  2. Ability to use Lab Interface Software (LIS) such as COPIA and HARVEST systems efficiently and effectively to help employees at other sites to properly transmit orders and results in a timely manner.
  3. Help to Maintain and customize Harvest/Copia including custom filters, quick comments, text shortcuts, user defined fields, correcting orders, matching results, insurance configuration and medical necessity checking then educate all UNHS staff on any changes to the system that directly affect them.
  4. Enter new tests and/or choices into the databases. Ensure the standardization of such across the four UNHS laboratories. Help to configure practices, locations, users, roles, and order choices.
  5. Understand the basics of HL7 messages and use the inbound and outbound queues. Help to verify, check and maintain interfaces and synchronization between instrumentation, Orchard, and Athena.
  6. Maintain current UNHS lab annual competencies at each UNHS clinic to ensure the meeting or COLA/CLIA requirements. This includes ensuring that each lab staff within UNHS completes annual Blood Borne Pathogen Training, Annual Competency pass off, and a minimum of 12 Continuing education credits.
  7. Help to troubleshoot problems as needed.
  8. Maintain current compliance with outside lab resources such as but not limited to IHC and Blue Mountain Hospital. Educate lab staff on any issues or new procedures required by these entities to ensure that lab samples, requisitions, and results are received in a timely and efficient manner.
  9. Ability to recognize any discrepancies present in the lab and work with current UNHS staff to correct the problem. If performance on an individual basis is not meeting UNHS performance guidelines or COLA/CLIA requirements, then UNHS lab disciplinary action policies will be followed.
  10. Ability to work to establish positive survey results with UNHS Laboratory Accreditation organizations.
Requirements:
  1. Develop and enhance current knowledge of LIS systems COPIA and HARVEST so that systems are efficient and functioning up to the needs of UNHS clinics. This may mean working alongside referral labs, Information software, Providers, and Nursing staff. Education to all UNHS lab staff on any changes needed or improvements will be relayed to all UNHS lab staff as needed to ensure that these systems function as intended.
  2. Conduct meetings on an as needed basis but no less than quarterly to assist UNHS lab staff with any new items of business, training needs, compliance needs, or any other items the UNHS lab manager, UNHS providers, or UNHS administration determine to be of need. All meetings that are conducted will have documentation to include those in attendance, items discussed, items needed, follow up items, assignments, and next meeting scheduled time and date.
  3. Ensure that all employees receive annual competency training for all lab items as determined by UNHS lab manager. Proper documentation of all competencies, Blood Borne pathogen training, and Continuing education will be maintained as per Laboratory Accreditation guidelines. Any employee not meeting competency requirements will receive disciplinary action as determined by this position and UNHS lab manager to ensure UNHS compliance with licensing bodies.
  4. Ability to identify areas of need within the UNHS lab system and ensure basic ability of the UNHS lab staff to complete everyday duties as determined by UNHS administrative staff and UNHS lab manager. Those unable to perform these duties will be given further education and further disciplinary actions as needed.
  5. Work with Reference laboratory staff to develop ways to ensure that proper collection and transport of samples is performed. Any new test or items needed will then be taught to all lab staff at scheduled meetings to ensure compliance.
  6. Continued quality improvement within UNHS labs will be completed as per COLA/CLIA guidelines to ensure the UNHS labs are performing to the best of their abilities. Any discrepancies will be identified, items for improvement will be discussed, and then UNHS lab staff will be educated on the proper improvements needed to ensure compliance with all lab rules and regulations.
  7. May be needed as the Laboratory or Technical Consultant.

Experience, Training, and Qualifications needed to perform the job:

  • Associate Degree (or B.S.) from an accredited college or university with a degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology/Science; and
  • Minimum Three years’ experience (preferred) in a laboratory supervisory role or Lab Interface System (LIS) Harvest and Copia knowledge (preferred)
  • Two years of supervisory or managerial experience.
  • MLT Certification

License/Certification:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • Must obtain and maintain First Aid/CRP certification
  • Must receive annual inoculation of flu vaccine.
  • Must possess current Phlebotomy certification.
  • Must provide proof of all vaccinations previously received.

As a Tribal Organization the Utah Navajo Health System, Inc. (UNHS) treats patients with high risk and underlying chronic medical conditions. Therefore, UNHS requires its employees to show proof of immunization prior to their employment with UNHS or during their employment. Below is a list of immunizations/vaccinations required to be employed or to continue employment with UNHS.
The immunizations/vaccinations include but not limited to following:

  • MMR (Measles Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella): Documentation of two MMR vaccines (OR) Documentation of MMR titers.
  • Complete Hepatitis B vaccine series (3 doses), documented proof of titers indicating immunity, or a declination that may be signed upon arrival.
  • Proof of up-to-date PPD skin testing, if previously negative (OR) Proof of positive PPD skin test with the most recent chest x-ray and treatment history.
  • Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap).
  • Varicella titers, history of varicella or varicella immunization series.
  • Influenza vaccine for the current year.
  • COVID-19 vaccine
  • Any other vaccinations as requested.
