Job Description – Material Flow Manager

FSLA Status: Exempt

Location: Lordstown, OH

Reports To: Production Control Director

Direct Reports: Material Flow Specialist, Material Flow Supervisor, Packaging Engineer, Packaging Engineer Supervisor, 3rd Party Equipment Maintenance

Primary Function: The Material Flow Manager is responsible for optimizing the end-to-end flow of materials, components, and packaging within a dynamic manufacturing environment. This role oversees internal and external logistics functions — including planning, storage, material control, packaging design, and movement — to ensure alignment with production schedules, customer requirements, and inventory objectives. The Material Flow Manager drives operational efficiency and continuous improvement across all material handling processes through data-driven decision-making and Lean principles.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee Daily Operations: Manage daily material flow activities and the performance of the Production Control support team, ensuring timely delivery of materials to production lines.
  • End-to-End Material Flow Strategy: Design, implement, and optimize factory layout and material flow strategies tailored for high-value electronic assemblies and low-to-medium volume manufacturing environments.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Production, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Quality teams to ensure seamless scheduling, kitting, and fulfillment of build orders and customer projects.
  • Launch & NPI Readiness: Lead material flow strategies and logistics readiness for new product introductions (NPIs) and manufacturing launches across multiple customer programs.
  • Lean Strategy & Optimization: Implement Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives, focusing on material presentation, inventory reduction, and efficiency of movement.
  • Equipment & Automation Management: Manage relationships with in-house and third-party equipment maintenance providers supporting automated guided vehicles (AGVs), conveyors, and material handling systems.
  • Packaging & Handling: Oversee the design, sourcing, and implementation of custom packaging for fragile, electro-sensitive components and high-value assemblies.
  • Material Handling Team Management: Direct and develop material handling, inventory, and packaging engineering teams to achieve departmental goals.
  • Performance Management: Develop, track, and report on KPI metrics (inventory accuracy, line fill rate, material usage efficiency, etc.) to assess process health and drive improvement.
  • Business Planning: Create and execute departmental business plans aligned to production volume forecasts and contract manufacturing growth targets.
  • Customer Support: Interface with customer operations teams for service part flow, configuration requests, and order fulfillment requirements.

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, or related field;
  • Master’s degree preferred.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of management experience within materials, logistics, or production control functions in high-tech manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ERP/MRP systems, pull systems, Kanban, JIT, and Lean logistics methodologies.
  • SAP experience required, with focus on EWM (Extended Warehouse Management) module.
  • Proven success in designing and sustaining efficient material flow systems supporting varied production models.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (VLOOKUP, pivot tables, dashboards) and comfort with data analytics tools.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Experienced in setting and delivering results through KPI-driven performance management.
  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and control cost.
  • Experience managing third-party vendors, equipment maintenance teams, and logistics partners.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience supporting contract manufacturing environments or electronics assembly operations.
  • Familiarity with automation and smart factory systems for material transportation.
  • Knowledge of ESD-safe packaging design and handling of sensitive electrical components.
  • Certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or equivalent continuous improvement training.
