Scope

The Internal Investigator is responsible for conducting independent, objective, and thorough internal investigations related to behavioral, ethical, and compliance matters within a publicly traded company. This role operates in accordance with U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) guidelines, applicable laws and regulations, and the company’s internal policies and code of ethics. The Investigator will work closely with leadership at all levels while maintaining professionalism, discretion, and independence.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct complex behavioral, ethics-based, and compliance-related investigations, including allegations of misconduct, violations of company policy, and potential regulatory or legal risks; distinct from physical security or asset protection matters.
  • Ensure investigations are conducted in alignment with DOJ guidelines, best practices, and Boise Cascade’s internal investigation policy and protocols.
  • Plan, execute, and document investigations, including evidence collection, interviews, analysis, and findings.
  • Interview employees, contractors, and third parties across all levels of the organization with professionalism and neutrality.
  • Prepare clear, well-supported written investigation reports, summaries, and recommendations for Regulatory Affairs, Legal, Human Resources, and executive leadership.
  • Assess credibility, identify patterns of behavior, and evaluate ethical risks and control gaps.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion and integrity.
  • Collaborate with Regulatory Affairs, Legal, Human Resources, and other stakeholders as appropriate while preserving investigative independence.
  • Develop meaningful reporting including trending analysis; support the company’s hotline administration and management.
  • Support regulatory inquiries, audits, and external investigations when required.
  • Travel extensively (up to 75%) to conduct on-site investigations, interviews, and fact-finding activities.
  • Stay current on DOJ guidance, regulatory expectations, and emerging best practices related to corporate investigations and ethics.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience conducting behavioral and ethics-based investigations within a corporate, regulatory, law enforcement, or similar professional environment.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting investigations in compliance with DOJ guidelines or comparable regulatory standards.
  • Strong interview, fact-finding, and analytical skills with the ability to assess complex and sensitive situations.
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple investigations simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing formal investigative reports.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and sound judgment.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a wide range of leadership levels, including senior executives.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 75% of the time.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a publicly traded company or highly regulated industry.
  • Background in compliance, regulatory affairs, legal, internal audit, human resources, or corporate security.
  • Familiarity with whistleblower programs, ethics hotlines, and compliance management systems.
  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g., CFE, CCEP, JD, or similar).
